Awesome to see mentions of Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap and Defenders of Oasis, those are 2 of my favorite games of all time!
I'd say some of mine:
Internal Section - a Japanese-only PS1 tube shooter released by Squaresoft of all people. Great trance and EDM soundtrack, and amazing hi-res visuals
Rez - This game is has a devout cult following but there are a lot of people who haven't played this masterpiece. Look up a video online if you have no idea what it is.
Valkyrie Profile - Awesome Nordic-themed RPG with side scrolling platforming sections and a combo-based battle system.
Langrisser/Warsong - Strategy RPG for Genesis where you command large armies to do battle.

Outstanding fuckin list. Warsong was gold, Internal Section is something I should check out, and Rez...well, if you are a TA and a gamer, you know what Rez is. BTW, for all 360 owners, word on the street is that Rez is getting a release on XBLA, which will be HUGE. that'll be the marketing push the game needs to get the success it originally deserved.

wonderboy and the draon's trap/curse (master system)
everyone always remembers the mario boys, but rarely considers the much more sophisticated wonderboy II (monsterworld) and III the dragon's trap. a platformer/adventure game where instead of a static, side-scolling platformer, you basically moved around as you saw fit, buying armour and weapons, potions, spells etc. in III you also had about 6 different animals you could change into that would allow you to do different things and get to different places. its one of the few 8 bit games that still get me off today.
Omg someone else actually owned a Master System? I thought I was the only one! But seriously... so many good titles on that system... Phantasy Star I, Golvellius, Y's...I cant even count how many times I've played through WBIII!
(BTW... any of you master system folk own any of the 3D games that used the glasses? Those things were heavy as fuck... but the 3d effect actually worked pretty well for the time. Better than the freakin virtual boy. [maze-hunter 3d ftw])

I've never even played a Master System of any sort, but I hear its a big deal that I have Phantasy Star IV on cartridge for Sega Genesis.
I also have II.

yeah, phantasy star on the megadrive was wicked. "shining in the darkness" was a "3d" dungeon scrolling RPG which was awesome as well, i loved the storyline.
