I'm pretty excited about it! And here I thought I was sitting around, just jerking off...who knew!?

regarding the topic though

i think it's actually rather interesting and honest expressionism

i have this notion that most creative acts of man are psychosexual in nature, and so this becomes like a really honest realization of those primal urges

creativity and sex (esp sex drive) are very closely connected IMO

it's also a powerful comment on the act of masturbation itself, which is in most cases a really fleeting and forgettable thing - usually semen is something which should be done away with and in this case he is basically immortalizing them.

i mean it's one thing to just jerk off on a piece of paper, but if you look at them they are actually rather well done and interesting - mostly because they actually seem to demonstrate the volatile, fluid, dynamic nature of the act - they're not simple stains - they show trajectory, movement, even character? in short they are expressive, and de-materialized through the addition of the graphite.

I think it's pretty interesting

i don't think it was done purely for shock value. that's old

i think in part it is an expression of personal freedom for the artist - the act of doing something just because you can is such an honest and true thing, and the fact that it is an intimate act of one's own body makes it even more such

this is truly every dadaist's wet dream

Seriously, though, this is the kind of "art" that comes from esteeming "concepts" and audience response above everything else.

"Look at me, I can publicly display the results of my wanking and thereby shock bourgeois sensibilities! How stylishly transgressive and artistic I am!"

Got us talking though... didn't it?

Not that concept art like this is really my thing... but I can see it's point. It shocks, gets people talking about it, and makes a suble commentary on the masturbatory nature of art in general.

The thing that angers me most about stuff like this is wondering why I never thought to do it myself! (I mean really, with this kind of work I'd be a farking Da Vinci!)

exactly!

now we need to talk about the even more masturbatory nature of art criticism and gallery culture

but that would involve a circle-jerk, not just one man

Also, I have to wonder why people think that all art is necessarily "masturbatory."

Because art is a reflection of what is on the inside of mankind - an expulsion of ideas, truthful or purposefully not. True, art is very often reflective of the world that man lives in rather than just feelings and turmoil, but if it is actually art, then it is still a reflection of perspective; a view into how somebody else sees the world.

With this in mind, it is quite possible for a great deal of things to be considered 'art': painting, drawing, music, basket-weaving - as long as it is expressive and takes a degree of skill or training to achieve a genuine reflection of outward insight, then it is, technically, 'art'.

This isn't to say that there is a whole lot of 'good' art out there - just to say that art, itself, *is* a sort of stroking of ones member - a stimulation of sorts, often for pleasure [but not always], that is intended to achieve an effect.
