What if it interrupted your frequent interaction? (e.g. if he suddenly converted to Buddhism and were offered an English teaching position in a Nepalese temple)

sorry, but picturing Chem as a Buddhist monk is fuckin' funny.

Provided that he and I were still interacting then his being happy benefits me; however, if it were to lead to a complete end to our interaction then I suppose rather then being happy for him I would be lamenting my own loss.

i'd say pretty often. if my friends/family are happy, or if they succeed at something they've put a lot of effort into, it's hard for me not to be happy for them. if it's just some random person or acquaintance, i might be like "hey that's cool - good for you!" but i wouldn't get all emotional about it.

I can care less now days. If they succeed...good for them, but if it doens't benefit me then I can care less.

I used to be everyone's cheerleader, but that gets old quick, and not getting any feedback from cheer-ee jaded the experience.

A prudently self-interested sort of empathy would be that which maximizes vicarious happiness and minimizes the vicarious experience of any negative emotion such as sadness, anger, et cetera.

When the other person is happy, you feel happy for them. But if they're feeling down, it's schadenfreude time, baby.

All the time, I am genuinely happy for my friends or family when good things happen to them. It feels good to see the people I care about happy and smiling.
If it's just a random person I don't really care for, then I'm completely indifferent.

I love reading a post ever so articulately put by someone like Arbiter followed by some bumbling idiotic cretin such as Enigmatik. The contrast in intelligence makes me feel plentiful happiness. Not so much vicariously though - More so directly.
