It does not have to necessarily do it better. The convenience is worth the sacrifice in quality.
But consider the mp3 player. A good mobile will be able to hold up to 8 gb of music, provide all the music library organizational features you'd expect in a dedicated mp3 player, and sound just as good. After all, whats an mp3 player got that a modern sophisticated mobile doesn't? The N95 even has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack (not the case with some dedicated MP3 players).
How about e-mail and personal organization? I don't think I need to say anything here.
Web browsing? If you need to check something on the fly it does the job just fine, and there is no dedicated mobile web browsing device.
Games? The N95 has a damn 3D-accelerator! The graphics are surely impressive and probably on par with portable gaming systems. I'm not familiar with the mobile game market though, I think games on a mobile are rather useless.
GPS? I agree, navigation om mobiles sucks compared to dedicated devices, but give it some time.
Camera? Sure, a mobile with a compact camera lens will not take pictures like a dedicated digital camera but the main attraction here is that you don't have to lug a second device around to take some spontaneous pictures. Cameras in good mobiles such as the N95 feature 5 megapixels, autofocus, image stabilizer, wide array of shooting modes, and a flash. Thats more than adequate to take some quick photos at a party for example. Video recordings are also decent.
Sound recorder, alarm, mass storage device, video phone, VoIP phone...
With all that said, $250, maybe $300 is the most I spend on a phone. For that reason I always get older models which are nearly as capable as the newest ones anyway.

hey, i understand the appeal of having an "all in one" product, but hybrids are never as good as the standalone. you always compromise somewhere.
but ill just respond to this bit; sorry, i have no respect for mobile phone games. none. i like them less than rape. |
I understand that, but if you decide to carry a separate dedicated device you'll end up spending a lot more money and might as well get a backpack. If I'm on my way to visit the Grand Canyon I'll definitely grab a proper camera, but on a day to day basis a phone with a decent camera allows me to take pictures I would've never taken before because I don't carry a camera around with me everywhere I go.
Can you explain to me the appeal in buying and carrying an MP3 player when my phone can do the same function just as good? Even better in the sense that its a lot more convenient since I carry my phone with me all the time anyway.

Price isn't an issue, but I've seen a lot of mixed reviews of the N95 online. Worst of all, a lot of them say it physically feels cheap. I guess I'm gonna hold off. For all its faults, it's hard to resist the IPhone, but I wanna wait for the 3G version. |
It does feel cheap, cheaper than my old 3650 felt...seriously you just dont the feeling that the thing sports a 550€ price tag. Im back to using my old 6600 now (until i find a store that has an E70, those things are impossible to find around here). If you have your heart set on a N series the N81 or N82 might be a better choice, but as always if possible try it out for a couple of minutes before you buy, if the cheapness doesnt bother you go for it, its not the worst phone out there but not the best either
