its is 99% the case if ypou produce a great tune your dj raputation gets biug unless you dont want to dj!

most DJs establish there name through producing good tunes rather that DJing, exceptions i can think of are scot bond and matt hardwick, but then again how popular is hardwick outside of the uk or even crasher? not at all, even though he is one of the best if not the best dj i have heard...

its a shame he is more often than not warm up dj for big events or other club nights, because ive seen him play 3 times before hard DJ/last set and he plays fucking amazing tunes. maybe that is why he is so underated.

it is like with dumonde, they produced great tunes and got a spot at GC as DJ. now even i admit at firs tthere mixing was not that good and they played quite a lot of cheesey or unfitting tunes in there sets. but last weekend i heard them it was a totally new dumonde, amazing!! so i think maybe they get popular thru producing and then get better at djing that way so their reputation fits their skill!

I felt the same way about Crystal Method.. They came to town, I went to see.. but who the hell are they when it comes to DJ'ing I thought. I figured .. hey cool.. Crystal Method.. nahhh. not so cool. Of course I could fit everyone that was there to see them in my house.. music sux where I live. I need to get off my ass to Toronto more.

That is a poor excuse for a world renowned DJ to consider making. A DJ should be adaptable enough to cater for an situation, if the monitors are too quiet or too loud a world class DJ should be able to mix through the headphones, which should give an undistorted sound and keep out the crowd noise!

Most DJ's have off days, they are human after all. But some of the excuses of mixing I have heard off of some of the so called big DJ's over the past 6 months has been shocking. Worst offenders: Dumonde (absolutly dire, not even close to getting the beats matched), Signum (totally pathetic), Lisa Loud (she was a joke, didn't know her way around an industry standard mixer), Dave Pearce (erm, did you do one decent mix tonight? No? Didn't think so).

I have heard DJ's who have been brilliant one month and pants the next, I have heard Don Diablo rock the Arches in Glasgow one month and then a few months later barely make half of his mixes. I have heard Dave Joy do flawless sets and do sets that make my mother seem like world DMC chamion!

And then we have the DJ's that never ever fail to impress me, the boys who regardless of genre always impress me with mixing techniques and track selection: Guy Ornadel (never heard a double beat from him, he is so smooth), Giotto DJ (his sets just carry such energy), Scot Project (poeple can say all they want about his musical style, his technical abilities are second to none).

I saw Tijs a few months back in Glasgow and his mixing was spot on, so it must have just been an off day!

I know what you mean. I think they get too ambitious and try out mixes they never thought of before into songs that'll really wreck the crowd but they just end up botching up the mix. I saw PVD live at Radiate (Washington DC) last November 2001 and he was amazing. He played great tunes and I can't remember a bad mix, but if you think about it he was mixing to a live audience. A live audience can't rewind the music and listen to hear if it was a bad transition or if that's how it was meant to be (although most people can tell). These DJs are not spinning so people can listen to the live set later, otherwise it'd be like they're making cd's and they'd have their set all planned out beforehand so that they don't make ANY mistakes and that would just take the fun away from seeing that DJ live.

ok. tiesto at nec awesome track selection. yeah the mixing wasnt spot on but shit happens sometimes and no way u can call him train wreck just from one set and at nec just couple of mistakes but i loved the way he mixed out of talla2xlc. he mixed out of talla perfectly.

Dutch Dimension: i am sorry but if u think his dimesnion set sucks than dude listen to it again because it is one of the best sets this year. Find me a dj that can play such an awesome long set with great tracks and excellent mixing. I dont think a lot of people will disagree on this set.

Tiesto rocks. personally i dont give a rat's ass about mixing as long as the tracks are good and put u in a tranzy mood then i am happy.

I have to disagree. If a DJ plays all the hot tunes then that is 70% brilliant, but if he cant put those tunes together smoothly, then that will put me off listening to him. Trainwreckz are ugly and hurt the ears. In Tiesto`s case, recently he has been up and down but im chilling and waiting for a set were he blows my balls off ! Im going to see him on 01/06/02 for 3 hours, so Hopefully he will fuckin redeem him-self !

well, i was @ NEC and tiesto sound fucking wicked live, no mixing probs atall, then i got home and downloaded the live set and OH MY GOD was his mixing not as good as i thought :P
i find that @ big events they can get away with alot just by having the bass on the incoming tune so loud, it sounds great with no mixtakes the system is so loud it sounds great whatever they do and u can tell the difference lol

where as with jules, im a big fan of his but i thought he sucked... i can think of 3 cases where the beats went totally fuckedup seemed like the tune has skipped mid mix, but wtf 3 times no and to no other djs .. no dont think so mr o'rioden, it might of had somin to do with him being last and me being wankered so i wasnt in the mood :P

Thats so true. A lot of big dj's now think: "i'm already famous and i dont even need to bother with mixing as long as the track is good. Let me just put it down and i'll go outside to smoke a cigarette while its playing". They think most people dont care about mixing and a lot of times they r right. there is no way u can tell me that when u go see a dj spin and not listening to the radio that u r waiting to see how he will mix out of a track. u go to dance ur ass off. i would rather have a dj spin great tracks that drive me insane rather than tracks that are boring as fuck but are mixed perfectly but thats just me.

yes i agree i hate hearing shitty tracks but when u in the scene long enough u start hearing little things when two tracks are mixed together and its just comes to u. Not like u not paying attention to it, but u just hear it and it really bothers a person when bad mixing is noticable.

Mixing is completely different factor from track selection. They r both essential and one shouldnt be without the other. So when tiesto spins good tunes but his mixing is shit becasue he just dont care, it makes him a person who dont give a shit about his job and audience

Yeha tiesto can do some good mixes if he wants, he is just lazy I think

Many other DJs cant mix for shit, blank & Jones and another famous german DJ Team tend to do cheap quick fades. But who cares???? as long as you dont trainwreck and have a good track selection its fine IMO
