Oh I love Starcraft as well. And you are incredibly right, playing on Battle.net back in the day was suicide for me because several folk learned all of these ridiculous strategies that I never knew were even possible, and I would get my ass handed to me.

If you like turned based strategy, try both:

Hereos of Might and Magic 3 (stay away from 4 it was shit)

Disciples II (incredibly addictive, they are working on Disciples III for release sometime this year)

Both would run well on your system.
