I'm guessing something about how many parents (esp immigrant parents) pressure their kids to pick major and uni/college that their kids may not necessarily want.

I can see how this might be necessary. I know my parents wanted me to take urban planning at ryerson, and I said firm no and took history which I wanted to.

Naturally, parents want what is best for their kids. But a lot of them don't realize that their kids' lives aren't theirs to live.
Parents should encourage, and give good advice, but never force their kids to do something once their kids are mature enough to make, and accept the consequences of their decisions

Finally! First time I saw one of those I was in the bus. I kinda glanced at it, and then looked again because I was sure there was NO WAY I had seen what I thought I had seen. Sure enough, something about OBAY. It's been driving me insane as to what the purpose was... lol

What's more, the chances of a child succeeding in a field of study (especially a likely difficult one like engineering, medecin, etc) which was forced upon him/her is very low. I can understand why a parent would want to try to force their child into a field of study that would lead to work in a more lucrative industry, but it's very misguided. In my opinion, for the average person, those fields of study are near impossible to excel in unless you take a personal interest in it.

yea and then u have people going in for an arts degree in photography or something cos "thats what they looooove" and then finding themselves stuck without a job in that "field" cos u dont really need a degree to be a professional photographer

totally agree...

I don't think parents should force their kids into something as long as they are not choosing to go to school for something that there is about 1% chance they will get a job in once they graduate...

My mom wanted me to be a dentist --- i am an electrical engineer since that is what I wanted...she didn't have a problem with it.

I think guidance is very important.

In Canada we encourage children to make adult decisions and encourage adults to be dictated to like children. What a strange country this is becoming!

I think that anyone is capable of succeeding at a more challenging degree, it will just take a lot more work and effort for some.

The worst thing is when I hear people say..."eww math, or eww science"...its cause they have this strange mindset that its horribly horribly challenging...well it isnt..it just takes time and practice.
