Maybe it's used elsewhere and I just haven't seen it - enlighten me oh c0r!

Well, imo, it's the main component of what made Facebook really take off - especially so to certain demographics (35+) that normally wouldn't touch a social networking site with a 10 foot pole -- if it wasn't for the mini-feed/profile content being updated with photos what other 'info' is really sticky/appealing enough to have many ppl hooked from the start? Photos.
Without it, everything else was basically the same - apart from a cleaner interface and nifty controls over who sees your information/profile.
Think about it -- prior to such efficient tagging it was the case that pics of you were buried off in someone else's profile/photobucket/wherever and it was up to you to go and download it and upload it to your own space/etc. That's tiresome and only the die-hards ever bothered to put the effort required to keep their pics fresh/recent -- most ppl have a friend in their social circle who is more into taking pics than others - 'tagging' allows that friend to take on the role of documenting social events you participate in.
My only beef is that they should have an option to ask your permission prior to allowing a friend to tag you in a photo -- but that would mean less updates and of course less pageviews - which is not a good thing since apparently Facebook is just breaking even.
facebook doesn't automatically detect anything... you have to manually tag everything. the box that surrounds what you tag is just a standard size (so if the pic was a huge close up of your face, the tag square wouldn't be the entire picture; whereas if it is a really distant picture of you, the tag square is not going to be smaller to adjust to your size).
i see what your beef is with the tagging without your permission...

and i think that sums it up just about perfectly.

You're right -- shows you how much I use Facebook/tag photos -- I just had the thought that at one point it had varying size blocks depending on the photo content - that's what I meant by automatically detecting it.
I remember reading this early last year and somehow I let that confuse me.

the only thing that i know that detects faces automatically is that who do you look like celebrity thing (hertiage) someone mentioned it already in this thread. Facebook tags manually
