Unfortunately (and quite surprisingly), it's not been added to Wikipedia's entry on the History of Purgatory yet... but I guess you can easily find it if you look it up

It shouldn't be surprising... the church is constantly examining itself and its doctrine. I'm sure that once the actual position comes out it will be well supported theologically.

With regard to the purgatory question... if I recall correctly there was no actual decision on whether or not it existed; however, it was resolved that the idea of time spent in purgatory was erred as time can not exist in a place without matter and subsequently without motion.

I think the usefulness of purgatory to the Catholic Church pretty much ended after the practice of paying indulgences to get relatives out of purgatory ended.

I find this interesting:

drug abuse

So theoretically I'm allowed to eat a mushroom once a week or to smoke some weed from time to time. There's no abuse in that, right?

He didn't give real details in the interview... as everything the Vatican does, you can expect their position will be very elaborate and complex, unfortunately, nuanced positions don't work for sound bites so the media will boil it down to "stem-cell research and polluting are deadly sins."

Oh, that explains why I couldn't find anything

I too believe the arguments will be well founded, but what surprised me was the fact that the 7 sins are so fundamental to Christian faith, that I didn't think they'd double them.

I didn't know about the second bit, thanks

No, not really.

Original seven deadly sins:

Luxuria (extravagance / lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride).

lust = pedophilia
greed = the creation of poverty
sloth = environmental pollution
pride= excessive wealth
gluttony = drug abuse
envy = genetic manipulation

its all relatively similar....just different wording, i think. obviously wrath/abortion doesn't really match up [although they kind of do...], but the rest i think are along the same *similar lines.

*similar does not mean exact. obviously there are different contexts
