as far as i am aware, the euphonix controllers use the same protocol as the mackie controllers (mackie hui, etc). i'll agree this is without a doubt the best protocol for mixer control, but that is about as far as it goes. it is definately not ideal for controlling plugins, which you will quickly realise when you try one out. in the absense of a system like sonar's active controller technology, using a wrapper like automap is the only real option. truth be told, ACT isn't really very good, as you have no parameter readout etc. you are flying blind.
here's my take...
mixer control -> euphonix or mackie
plugin control -> automap or a dedicated midi box (uc-33e etc.)
mixer AND plugin control -> automap
of course, these protocols are all very complex and every daw handles them differently. for example, there is little point in getting an mcu if you run ableton - all you would get is fader and pan control. if you're getting an mcu or euphonix console, you would really want sonar, logic or cubase, since they have a more regimented channel eq/send/insert system.
