Why would you need to be able to read notes to produce? Its not like you're trying to play live music that somebody else wrote...

well here´s my little tip for you:
from what i´ve learn theres only 2 type of musicians the one that was born with it, and the one that develops the skils.
i´m not going to get into the debate of one vs the other one cause is endless both have their advantages and disadvantages, but what you should be focusing on is try to listen to your favorite track, it does not matter what type of genre it is.. and so try to decompose it.
for example start with the easy part sometimes it could be drumm patterns, or bass lines, but quite often the melody is the hardest part to identify.. once you have manage to done that, try to emulate it with your body for example if it is EDM try to mark the beat with your foot, and the snare with your hand or a clap and i´m pretty sure if you keep hearing it you will be able to reproduce it... and the funny thing is you are training your hearing capabilities too.
i´m not saying is the best advice but i´m just sharing what worked for me a while ago maybe it could work out for you the same way, also read a lot try to get some theory of the instruments, analyze how they work, what can you do with them, and get some knowleadge of the genre of music you preffer,
what is their own characteristics that makes it called that genre.
i hope i have been helpfull....

writing music on paper was for before you had midi recording. as a reference so you dont forget the notation of a piece. sure it might be good to send to a classically trained singer songwriter for use when writing lyrics to a melody, but other than that, its pointless imo.

my mother teaches piano and a lot of the learning people do is with regards to reading music. and the only reason you need to read music is if you are playing music you didnt write yourself. the writer of a piece can always play it blind.

i have to admit, it would be nice to be able to jot down a few notes on a pice of paper when i get a melody in my head, but instead, i whistle the melody into my mobile phone's voice recorder

Some of us just use our ears. No reading notes required.

I've been going by ear for years now. Lately, I've been studying music theory....hasn't helped much though.

The blocks on a digital sequencer are just another way of interpreting music; to me, it's better than standard notation, for several reasons, but your mileage may vary.

But I find it hard to beleive that someone like AvB doesn't know how to read score or tab.. very suprized, actually I simply don't beleive it.

It is hard not to learn how to read music if you make it, very difficult.

Even if it is not traditional score, fruity has it's neums (or nodes) which are very easy to translate to score, and also piano role, it is spacing.. that is music right there... it isn't staff but it is essentially all the same stuff...

I simply refuse to beleive that AvB can't recognize notes.

I believe the same as you either, i mean there is an interview on youtube, where he admit he took piano lessons when he was on his teenagers, so yeah like i said before guys, there is people that was born with it, and there is some that develops the skill, check this out, how do you think beethoven created such beautifull music being deaf?

i´m not saying it is needed, but definately it would help at some point, but it does not mean you can´t do it if you don´t read notes.. :P

alot more important to know some chords, and how some of them fit at the piano imo. to know that certain dot on a notespread is C or whatever is not usuable for nothing unless ur going to play another mans work. know the pianoroll instead, and try imagine when u hear a track how it is played on the piano, both tone and rhytm. maybe
