One year my buddy who was teaching English in Korea watched a game from my computer here in Ottawa as I just pointed my webcam to my tv and left the room for an hour or so. Too bad these games aren't on the web like the NCAA tournament, unless I'm wrong here otherwise.

you are wrong my friend
on cbc.ca they stream for free almost all the games of all the canadian teams on the weekends (maybe also some during the week). you just pick the one you want to see. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/ a link will be clickable in the media player to watch the games available.
also now RDS offers to watch a habs game online for 3$ per game or for a limited time for less than 30$ all the games left for this season plus all potential ones for the playoffs.
there's always NHL center ice online... same as rds but all nhl games every day.
or you could try to find a webtv streaming software to watch whatever available on the channels they have.

Well, for some reason he couldn't do all that in S Korea. This was a few years ago and he's pretty tech savvy too.

you mean like cause the web sites are blocked ?
thats sucks cause the cbc streaming is very very good.
its not sharp like on tv but enough to watch a game. Its has also a good frame rate.
