My least favourite 2nd waver, although he's still a legend and one of the most important techno figures

I've seen him few months ago. His beat matching during the whole set was one of the worst ones I've ever heard. He had tons of mistakes.

he was pretty spot on when i saw him at tresor last fall

i can't speak for what you saw/heard, but i see various members of UR, Francois K, Juan Atkins, Theo Parrish, Kevin Saunderson actually surprisingly regularly, and their mixing isn't exactly what you would call 'smooth', (though sometimes it is) but it's definitely not bad. Jeff Mills of all of them takes the most risk when mixing because of how he layers tracks. I rather like the fact that it all feels a little bit out of control, because, well, that's how a lot of mills-style detroit techno sounds anyways, and how the parties are anyways.

i think he looks at his deejaying as an experiment, and sometimes experiments blow up in your face.

Cyrus - Enforcement (Mills Mix) [Basic Channel]

i have to open for yahel in a couple of weeks and I think I am going to lead into his set with this track lol

I'm astounded at the number of people who say his mixing was "spot on" - I just don't believe it for even a minute.

Maybe they were just fun parties and you didn't notice how awful he was... ?

He's really, really bad. Really. Bad.

Just watch the slices documentary on Richie Hawtin or High Tech Soul and you will get how influential and revered the man is. His insane style may not suit all but he can beatmatch like a mthrfcker.

I'm not sure how you could call him mainstream. He's never really had any commercial hits.

I'm still looking to find some of his old stuff on CD.

You, of all people, should know better. FFS, you're from Detroit.

Or just too much time with Sketchy Steve before every Mills show you've been to?

Very easily found and goes for pretty cheap, too. Check Discogs or Amazon.
