lol i understand that chart perfectly. i ALWAYS mix in key, thats one the 3 rights to my methods of mixing 1.right key 3.the right tracks. 2.right bpm (cuz it you're too far apart it will fuck up your key mixing).



mixing in key is some wonderful stuff, it sounds soooo much smoother, and you have more flexibility and can pick out more mix points in a track. always a smooth transition! not only does it sound awesome, but you can do some neat stuff with it too, like skip keys in a certain pattern to create modulation tricks!

many dj's use both mixing in key an mixing on cue (which im guessing is just mixing tracks as they come without regard to key)

.....but seriously if you have a large enough collection to play with and all the songs are keyed why would you want to mix otherwise?

Because you dont always need to be in key for the mix to sound great, and sometimes tracks that ARE in key will not sound that amazing together. Also lots of minimal tech and techno, and tunes with less melody do not need to be mixed in key.


I go by feeling most of the time and just use the keys for extra ideas or when I'm unsure about a pairing.

. Harmoic mixing is one of the biggest loads of shit ever, just because two songs are in the same key doesnt mean they will always sound good together. Yes, sometimes they do, but it isn't something you can count on.
Know your music and it will sound good. If you don't your music well enough to know what will sound well togerher you shouldn't be DJing anyways. :P

yup i agree, most techno and minimal tracks don't have to be mixed in key. and you still need to know how to choose the right tracks even if you mix in key.

Each key is assigned a keycode number from one to twelve, like hours around a clock. To select a compatible key from any origin keycode, choose a keycode within one number of your original keycode. THAT'S IT! If you are in keycode 9, you can select an 8, 9 or 10. If you are in keycode 4, you can select a 3, 4 or 5. If you are in keycode 12, you can select an 11, 12 or 1. Your best mixes will be into another song at the same speed and key.

Both. If im getting what you mean by cue as being related to beatmatching.

For me if it dont sound good together, scratch it and find something else.

+1 on that Bro! Plus partying is more Fun! I tend to mix both that's why I prefer to be a Lappy DJ so I don't have to spend too much time on beat matching and looking for que points. Most of the time I'm dancing with people that come up to the booth or inter acting with the crowd.

Btw..... I mix on cue.

i use the camelot system sometimes. but most of the time its all by ear.
