I'd recommend that they do something more useful. Philosophy is great as a way to learn argument and conceptual organization for other disciplines, but basically inane and pointless when studied in isolation.

I'd probably agree with that, but don't think it's a cynical outlook at all. There's some merit in using philosophy for the sake of philosophy, but few people take it all the way and use it in an academic sense.

I do, however, think it's invaluable for just about any other kind of career - philosophy provides insights into how to create sound and logical arguments, as well as providing what I think can be a very, very important shift in perspective on any given topic that one may not even recognize until they take a step out of whatever discipline they're in and attempt to look at it from the "outside in."

/rambling nonsense from an idealist phil. major.

Discussing the merits of studying philosophy is such a stupid and useless thing, that only philosophers would engage in it.

It's only pointless to those who don't understand it and who are afraid that people using "big words" and abstract concepts are really just plotting against them.

People always fear what they don't understand.

Reason why I study it along with linguitics.

Both philosophy of language and philosophy of science have helped me open my mind about lots of issues that I had never thought about... I wish we had both majors and minors here, though, that way I'd be a certified philosophy minor

How either of those things qualifies as "useless" is beyond me - but will do.
