I've noticed this is mostly a city thing. Myself, I do enjoy my personal space and in any event I try to sit as far as possible from where everyone else is sitting. So long as I'm in the city everybody else seems to do the same. When I get to the suburbs it's actually quite frequent when the bus is empty for someone (usually someone old) to come in, sit next to or in front of me and strike up a random conversation.
