model numbers and pics would help this process along a lot better

i'd also recommend taking some time and learning the technical side of things better (stuff like this, how to properly wire a sound system and make sure your decks are hooked up properly) hooking up speakers to an amp then to your mixer would be considered basic stuff, outputs to inputs, it's elementary dear watson

i understand you're new at this and it's all a little foreign to you but having a basic understanding of how this stuff works goes a long way and will do nothing but serve you well in your dj endeavors, so if you have any questions post, but at least make an effort on your part to take a looksee, the internet is a marvelous place of info and pr0n

you're making sense, sort of, like j:\digital said, i've never seen active speakers that use speaker wire

so yea, some make and model numbers of your speakers and amps would help us help you

Why is there so much attitude on these forums? To the guy who said to search the internet for more info - well, I decided to check with the enlightened TA community first. I am not asking as to how to mix, how to connect the wires, how to put the mixer on the table properly, etc. - that I can read and google about. For one pair of speakers in question, its Kenwood JL-558 speakers I had for a while, it seems like they're passive. So I suppose I am going to have to buy a pair of active speakers. Any recommendations for a good pair with loud sound good for a mixer like mine? A pair of good speakers under $800 ...

what i was trying to say is, try not to make this your only stop for info, look for answers instead of just waiting for them kinda mentality

the whole, give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime, we can just tell you how to do it but you're able to learn a lot more from this... which wouldn't be so much teaching a man to fish but telling him where to find out how...

anyway...

as for your kenwood speakers, yes, they're passive, you're going to need an amp to run them, any home theatre amp will do just fine, then you take an output from your mixer to an input on your amp, hook up the speakers and away you go, they will work just fine for your needs, no need to go pick up another pair of speakers

The biggest problem I have is that I dont have any friends who are interested in DJing or know anything about speakers or who have any help or ideas (most of my friends dont even listen to electronic music). So I am going blind into this. I honestly dont know why the hell I am spending $3000+ on my DJ equipment/setup.

Another question - whats the difference between an amp and a subwoofer? Many of you guys are recommending an amp, which I guess I'll buy.

Another problem - I was given huge attitude at my local electronic store for an amp. The guy refused to even talk to me saying that I should by a new pair of speakers instead (of getting an amp).

Can you guys recommend some decent amp's for under $800? Many thanks.

the diffrent between an amp and a speaker.

there are what is called amplified speakers meaning they have an amplifier built into them. The amplifier is what takes the sound coming from your mixer and boosts it up so that it is louder and can be played through bigger speakers.

non amplified speakers are the kinds of speakers like car subwoofers that require an external aplifier to power them.

chances are your mixer is amplified on the speaker out so why not get some JBLS. not sure how much they are but they are the standard in dj setups plus they are loud as shit. after i eat dinner I will find a picture of them and I think you will really like them in comparison to what your investing in already. might even save some money, plus they are loud as shit.

He doesn't need JBL monitors when he is starting out... What he has will work just fine with a good amp (cheap good amp)..

I have this problem alot, when people explain things their way it leaves me baffled not reffering to you but almost makes your wonder if they are even comprehending the language that they speak. I have found that through my many years of sales and customer service that if I explain things my way then people genuinely feel like they are being helped and are recieving informative responses to help them make a wise purchase. but to answer your question, I was explaining the purpose of each of them without prodviding a diagram so that he would understand the sole purpose of each one of the diffrent pieces of gear,

YES!!!!!!!!!!! He could go out and spend the money on a AMP and some speakers that are not amplified. and if he bought some 1000 watt amp that would provide a decent level of amplitude for level 1 use and or the extremely loud club venue then he could do that.

or for $500 dollars he could get some really cool JBL DJ monitors that are portable and loud and are really cool toys and make someone feel truely special about the purchase that they have made by offering them something unique, easy to use and something that is of all things user friendly without too much room for error such as amp going bad wich in most circumstances may or may not happen since club amps are not the same as car amps. and please do not respond by saying he doesnt need a club amp he just needs something simple.

although depending on the model of JBL may have a diffrent level of wattage or ampage (with two quads per channel) (Boogie Nights) I think that almost everyone would prefer the better built speaker system with the amp built in. Besides unless he is running a home stereo system I dont know where he is gonna find a 250watt amp.

Now if he is running a home theatre system and wants two diffrent sets of speakers wich is what he may be trying to accomplish (although I think the JBLs are chick magnets) He could do one of two things get a switch and plug the master out into the swithc and run diffrent speakers into the switch or if the mixer has two diffrent outputs wich would seem odd beacause stereo is only two channels dont understand how it converts it. I guess it is like a soundcard. He could therefor run TWO diffrent sets of speakers into his mixer providing he has the right adapters because apparently his speakers have diffrent connectors. Lets say for example he has three sets of maybe even four sets of speakers then he could use a Y cable and split those connectors off.


DO REMEMBER THE RULE OF PRO AUDIO IS YOU NEVER USE ADAPTERS BECAUSE IT CAUSES QUALITY LOSE.


or he could maybe even plug the external out into his home stereo and use it as an amplifier as well. there are many diffrent configurations but I think the JBLS would be alot cooler.

I personally have had TEN SPEAKERS running to my DJ mixer, I used alot of Y cables and adapters but it was cool. but over all halfass.



BUT DO REMEMBER AN AMP IS WHAT POWERS THE SPEAKERS, then he will also have to configure the AMP to avoid too much base or treble depending on the amp.
