People like to make the argument that satellite radio subscribers are somehow a different group of people than regular radio listeners, I strongly disagree! People subscribe to satellite radio for 2 main reasons 1) the programming is better or 2) the quality and reception is better. thats it! They are ultimately the same people, they just can't find what they are looking for on FM so they pay for satellite radio service because (at least for now) satellite radio is struggling and so they are working hard to keep listeners happy.
Let's flash back for a moment to when cable tv was just getting started because I think that is a perfect example. Huge infrastructure expenses putting cables under every street and connecting every house. At that time everyone got their channels with a tv antenna. People couldn't imagine paying for cable. the cable companies targeted people in poor reception areas so those were the first subscribers, also at that time cable promoted their service as ad-free programming with premium channels loaded with movies, surely people would pay for better quality and no ads. People did, and now years later over the air television is dead, if you want to watch tv you have to subscribe to cable or satellite tv service both of which are loaded with dozens of ads per hour AND over 90% of the content is garbage! So bad infact that people now pay for another subscription to TiVO just to filter through the junk! LOL!
Personally I have no attachment to HD Radio, I would support any improved FREE radio broadcast technology. I just think that we all should look at what we're getting ourselves into when we willingly agree to subscribe to dozens of services that over time offer less services and end up costing way more than they should!
What I would really like to see is better wireless internet coverage, then we can all listen to internet radio in the car and STFU! it's 2008 for crying out loud!
I should add though that even though satellite radio and FM compete for the same listeners it is incorrect to assume that means the satellite radio merger is good for us the listeners. No matter how you spin it one satellite radio company IS a monopoly, it will only result in higher subscription costs and/or less service.
