Someone uses jbl's at home...?

Um, I understand how you all are all 'woohoo' over these PA speakers and stuff, and I understand that...

..but just cause some company has great public adress and musician's speakers doesn't mean that their hi fi or home theater speakers are up to par, you know? PA speakers and Home speakers are two INCREDIBLY different worlds, and I would never buy home speakers on the basis of excellence in P.A....

the mackies will over heat tho.
The reason the JBLs wont is that while the sub is pushing air out, venting in the front of the speaker takes that very same air and uses it to cool itself

my mackies have never overheated, and being in one of the warmer countries in the world (australia) i'd say thats pretty decent. And i crank em for hours and hours.. never had a single problem with them.

i tested the jbl eon 15 and g2's in store (cranked em) and i thought they were pretty poor for the price, was pretty dissapointed.

you wont need an amp with either the mackie or jbl's (unless u want to for some unknown reason)..

of course the speakers in clubs are gonna sound amazing, but they cost a fucking shitload. nothing you'd wanna waste you money on just for a home setup.. unless you like having your walls crumbling down and windows shattered.. :|

Why in the world would you need a 300w active monitor for home use ?! You'll probably be driving it at 10% power most of the time anyway, so why not just save a lot of money and get regular home stereo speakers. Or if you have money to burn, studio monitors. JBLs and Mackies are overkill for a bedroom DJ.

How do active speakers work? do you just plug the mixer directly into the speakers? Do active speakers usually cost more?

Active speakers are speakers that include their own integrated amplifier. This means that, somewhere in the speaker, they have an amp, to make the speakers loud, and a preamp, so you can set the volume of the speakers. This saves space in situations such as for studio monitoring, and for PA systems, as it is one less component to deal with. Few hi fi systems use this, though some do, as it is less flexible for maximum sound quality... but it is very simple, as you can plug these speakers into any line level analog output...
