So we made it back alive as well. My overall impressions this year are pretty much positive all around. The production value of the festival was top notch this year. The lines, cleanliness and overall comfort level of the festival were good and better then years past. All the artists that I had a chance to check out brought it and it seemed as if there was a little bit of something for everyone at each stage. The underground stage sound sucked like always and I avoided it all weekend.

My only real complaint was how jacked the lines were when the festival first opened. We asked about 8 people were we should be standing if we already had tickets and got about 8 different answers. It was pretty much a mess but it seemed as if everything had been figured out after a few hours so no sweat.

I wasn’t too crazy about the lineup this year but had a chance to check out a few good sets. Tyco, Konrad Black, Hearthrob were a few sets I had a chance to actually listen to and enjoyed. The three people I wanted to hear were Alex Smoke, Alex Under and Cobble Stone Jazz I missed because of having to spin or work parties so that was an epic fail. The past few years most of mine time was spent actually listening and checking out artist but this year was more socializing than anything.

Saturday Night I had to start and work the Volatl party which went off pretty well. Good crowd of people and everyone seemed to bring it on the decks. I had to bounce a bit early since I was out all day, got to the party so early and had to spin the next night but I heard it ended in style so nice one.

We went to Oslo for a bit on Saturday before leaving for Bleu to play. The only thing decent about the party was being able to see a bit of Jamie Jones who was great and getting to hang out with good people. Throwing a water bottle at Clovis was fun, probably didn’t know him long enough for it to go over well but he seemed to handle it like a man, lol. Personally the party was still oversold and I would have had a much better time if I could have actually walked into the main room without needing an oxygen tank and a bat to beat people away. I heard it got closed down early which was probably a good thing because it was a fire trap down there.

Yes I did have to play on one CDJ at Bleu because Benny is a little bitch and needed three CDJ’s which left us with only one downstairs. I was really tempted to just leave but a few encouraging friends pushed me to stay and I’m glad I did. Talk about making the best of a situation, lol.

Monday morning we made the trip to Old Miami which was EPIC on so many levels. People wearing sunglasses in the morning with a thick overcast are full of win. Old school jams mixed with minimal tech was a very nice way to start the morning. Damn cab driver of course didn’t turn on the meter so I gave him a yell and he did. You really have to watch that because some of them with tell you like 20 bucks or something when it should only be 5 and then it all goes downhill from there.
Anyone who got a glimpse of the train wreck that I became at Old Miami consider yourselves lucky because that was a rarity. Honestly I was really having a hard time keeping it together after a few hours, lol. That was a perfect way to end the weekend. We ended up bouncing right after we had to check out of our hotel after leaving OM and it was probably for the better. After three days of partying it was apparent we didn’t have much left in us.

Overall I would give the weekend a 9.5 out of 10. Had a great time mainly because of the people that we were hanging with. Pretty much no drama which is awesome and we played are cards right all weekend and it paid off. I have some pictures that I will post up later this afternoon probably.

It was a great to see all the TA's out and about. Holler .. and shit.

This is what we heard from everyone as well - also, KT played very, very housey. It was neat.

Though if those two were the only ones you wanted to see you probably made the right call staying home (though again, everyone who went specifically for Deadmau5 had nothing but great things to say).

KT was very, very housey?! That really depresses me lol... why are there like no trance/progressive artists at DEMF ever ): I heard Deadmau5's afterparty was sick too

Well I'd wager a guess that it's because DEMF began as a tribute to Detroit techno, which is about as far from house and trance as one can possibly be.

For my part, I'm glad they don't bring too much stuff like KT and Deadmau5 in - DEMF has, for me, always been about DJ's who actually do something more than intro/outro mixing.

It's funny to me to see things like the Armin setup from Saturday night - because almost every jock we saw at DEMF did more with two vinyl decks and a mixer than guys like Armin could even fool people into thinking he's doing with four decks and an EFX unit.

Keep the trance and prog for the kids who don't know any better.

Edit: And I should be absolutely clear that I love KT, play Deadmau5 tracks, and have been known to enjoy a fair bit of trance - it definitely has its place. I just don't think that's what DEMF has traditionally been about.

We quickly got our act together in our room, which for me meant putting the bubblegum pink in my fauxhawk. Rockstar Rooster was a good description of what I looked like. While the shuttle bus took us down to the plaza all the sights suddenly became clearer in my mind. The Sun God, Carl Cox's fist, and the downtown buildings made the city look richly polished in comparison to the outskirts. Detroit!! I couldn't keep a smile off of my face as we purchased our tickets (didn't take too long) and received our shiny silver bracelets. Once again, the check at the front entrance was lacking. Wasn't expecting the plaza to be fairly packed on Saturday afternoon. Last year it was quite dead at 4 pm, but then again, it was raining at the time. They hadn't made any changes to the overall layout and design of the festival. It made me feel like I never left it last year, which was nice. A few stage name changes, and an underground stage were the only differences I noticed at first. We gave our DEMF newbies a tour of the place and I started to feel chills down my spine. It took a while for me to process that I was actually at DEMF and that I wasn't dreaming. We walk by the main stage and I remember the view from the top of the stairs: the panorama of the beautiful hotels and city structures circling the back of the stage <3. I was itching to go to my favourite stage, the beatport tent! They managed to upgrade the sound system as it was crisp and sounded great from any position of the tent. They removed the side/back wall tarps that they had last year, which enabled a cool breeze to enter the tent throughout the day/night from all areas. Thousands of people were in attendance already on the first day, and more than a handful of these were interesting to say the least. I found that this year the attendants were a lot friendlier than the last. I took a dozen pictures of and with randoms, held hands and spun a bunch of people like ballerina's, and introduced them to Ducklet. Their reactions were all positive, and the interactions I received in return were awesome. I even managed to GWARTQWZ!! a few people, lol! I wouldn't be able to do this in Toronto. Ducklet and I first felt like movie stars on Saturday, but it continued throughout the weekend. We got paparazzied by magazines and websites, and fans of our lives . The levels of ridiculous characters were the same as last year. Lots of candy raver kids (I felt like one with my hair!), gothic wear, and a new addition: spandex butts! Some memorable characters on Saturday included Wholesome Candy Arby Girls, the return of Grandma Techno, and Pink Fufu with Ducklet's girlfriend, Spaghetti Piggy! There were many good looking people, and once again, folk from all over! One major difference I noticed this year was dancing. As opposed to last year, almost everyone was givin' er' and they were all talented dancers. Last year wasn't so much the case, as our crew felt like we were professionals in comparison to the rest... plus, last year we had more guidos. I made my mark in the Beatport tent, and stayed until the end rocking it out. Wasn't sure who was playing until Long came on and got me going. *Justin Long* Great way to start the weekend! First time checking Long out live and I was impressed. He woke up the crowd and ended their conversations. A few familiar tracks were played; tech house was his main focus with a few surprises here and there. It wasn't that memorable, but probably one of the better opening sets for me. I found his mixing was above average, while his selection could have been chosen better to blend. He really got me going when he dropped: Andy Caldwell - Warrior (Claude VonStroke Sharp Toof Mix) I'm usually not a fan of CVS tracks, but this one is an exception. He followed this up with Guido Schneider & Andre Galluzzi - Albertino. *Joris Voorn* Joris aka Curious George came on at 7:30 and despite what others have said, I thought it was a fine preformance. It was live, consisting of most of his works, which would include some of his older, melodic techno. He looked really happy behind the booth... but who wouldn't be, when you've got the myspace girls kicking tits right beside you: Booya!! haha. They were giving out all kinds of myspace gear which was cool. Joris played Rejected - Lost and also one of his most memorable tracks Joris Voorn - MPX 309 The crowd went insane to this! Unfortunately towards the middle of this track, the candy kids started cheering on Deadmau5's name as he was putting on his head. Disrespect... I couldn't believe how many children came out just to see him. Arrrrg! I gave him the finger with Ducket, and cheered on Ducklet to take over the booth instead, bwahaha. We decided to quickly run away Went to the main stage to check out a bit of Zip, who was dropping some creeeeepy minimal. Wanted to relax but decided to go up to the front and kick some ass. *Alex Smoke* Came back in time for Alex Smoke! It started to get dark outside, so they turned on the lightshows in the Beatport tent. Just as awesome if not better than I remembered. These lights are what started the whole 'unicorn hunting' fiasco. His performance consisted of harder techno followed by dark, bumping minimal. Some of his tracks were way too disturbingly good! He played one track that sounded like sexual ghosts haunting a cemetary: Alex Smoke - Blackbody Pulled the pink hairs off of my back for this one! Even Julio Fey's 20 inch hair spiked up! Couldn't recognize others, but I was about to award him with Live Set of the night. *Alex Under* When he played in Toronto a month or so ago, it was unbelievable. His productions were some of the first that got me into minimal techno. He closed the Beatport stage and I was all alone, losing my mind to his set for the last hour. Melodic, slow, groovy tunes.. loved it! Alex Under - -7 Alex Under - Extrapezlo Deadly! Crowd was delved into his sound, and I could tell they were feeling the same sensation that I was. I didn't hear my current favourite track of his, but he played my older favourite as his closer! Alex Under - El Encuentro Couldn't have been happier at this moment, but I had wished that everyone else has stayed for it. The track tells a story of the voyage of a hot air balloon in the night sky. As day one of the festival came to an end, I was forced to walk back to the hotel, after waiting 30 minutes for an available cab. I walked 20 minutes to my hotel from the festival, alone at 12:30 am in Detroit. I had balls that night... I decided to brush off the Minus Party and hit the 9 - 5 after party solo. [The Other 9 - 5] When my cab ride came to a halt, I realized that this was the same venue that held my favourite after party from last year, the Tronic Treatment party. Although there was rap blasting from the main floor, I knew this was going to be a killer party. The party consisted of 2 floors, rather than 3 from last year, but the 2nd floor and attic were used rather than the main floor and basement. The 2nd floor was a sports bar turned into an old school Detroit techno club. Grungy, dirty, and not pretty; just the way I like it! The turnout for this party was excellent! Some dude recognized me from mnml.nl and apparently he was friends with all the deejays who were playing. Also ran into some annoying fellow named Troy, who we ditched at Old Miami last year. lol. Managed to catch a bit of Camea, [a]pendics shuffle, Dirtybird, Apnea, and Miss Fitz on this floor. Lots of variety and each had something different to offer behind the decks. Camea's set stood out to me the most, and I managed to hear her drop Elon - Noose Quarky, foot flopping, pick me upper track. The attic upstairs looked like a meeting spot for gangs or shady dealings. Great artistic graffiti on the walls. It was really dark in here. Someone decided to twist the light bulb to make the place even darker! I liked it up here the most. The vibe was consistantly crazy, especially up at the front where a bunch of older people were showing the youth how it's done proper. Kate Simko was playing for quite a bit. Wasn't feeling her more underground set as much as I wanted to, because it wasn't what I was expecting from her. It had it's moments towards the end though, and I was sweating buckets by then. At 4 am they cleared out the smoking area at the back and used it as a vending room where they were selling balloons filled with nitrous oxide. He he he he he ha ha! I was tempted into buying one, and so I did. Let's just say it was quite the experience in that dark room! Adultnapper closed the room. His set exceeded my expectations and was awarded the best after party set this year for me. Great energy, impressive track selection overall. Would of been a sight if he played at the festival, but for those who didn't make it out for this party... you missed out! I thought I was tiring out, with the severe ventilation issues and all, but then he decided to drop one of my current favourite tracks! Audion - Billy Says Go Whoa! Awesome track with a sort of aztec influential sound. Typical Audion material. System 7 - Space Bird (Dubfire Remix) was also played. Called it a night just before 5 am to get some sleep for Day 2! Sunday Woke up in the afternoon and quickly got ready! There was no time to waste today. This time the theme for me was green. I got called a Palm Tree! Made it to the festival just before 4 pm again, and this time the plaza was packed! Day 2 last year was the same case. The number of candy ravers had died down a lot, but thousands of normal looking partiers took their place. I had a feeling that Day 2 would be mental! Some character highlights on this day include Old Clown From The South, Death Man, Old Macdonald, and... I'll leave this til later. Don't think I left the Beatport tent at all this day. The lineup of deejays was just ridiculous! We must of yelled out as a group, "I love my life 2008" more than 20 times this day. I was feeling a bit sore but regained my energy at 5 pm. *Heartthrob* Can't remember if I've seen him live before, but already I was loving it. Decided to chill out for a good portion of his set considering how groovy and downtempo it was at times. There was a lot of upper shoulder liquid movements going on during his set, and I'm not speaking just on my behalf! Programming was ingenious for a live set! Typical tracks heard: Seph - Dash (Hearthrob's Acid For Bongo Interpretation) Troy Pierce & Heartthrob - Horse Nation Amended Delicious! *Paco Osuna* Since Marco Carola wasn't able to play, they managed to get Paco Osuna as a last minute addition. I'm glad that they did, because his set was bonkers! Lots of bumpity bump tech house and clackity clack techno. Two hours of goodness and never a dull moment! We had a good crew busting moves at our old spot from last year. Refrained myself from leaving during the entire set. I mentioned the word bonkers...well.. he actually played a track of his that sounds like it says 'bonkers' in it: Paco Osuna - Tansheet F*cking bonkers! Not to mention the following tracks.. Florian Meindl - Blast Paco Osuna - Orbeat Florian Meindl - Subfocus Radio Slave - Grindhouse (Dubfire Terror Planet Mix) D'Julz - Just So You Know <3 As soon as a I saw my techno vixen aka wife #2 on stage I got excited! *Magda* I've never heard a bad set from her, but I was a little disappointed with her at times. She started off with her trademark deep techno with those murderous basslines and veered off into slower minimal. It was great for the first hour but I was getting a bit bored. At midpoint her set suddenly progressed into something else. It became dark out, and the trippy lights were out again, illuminating her on the decks. It was coordinated so well that it almost seemed like she manipulated the sky to change with her set. With that said, she started bringing out the bombers. Relentless, head flinging tracks that made me spin circles of intensity. I couldn't ID any of her tracks, but I managed to capture a few gems on video, including the most crazy track played that whole weekend: Deep Track: Crazy Track: I do recall hearing Loco Dice - Tight Laces which was something otherworldly! We spotted our old friend Troy from last year again, but this time he was behind Magda taking pictures. We then came to the realization that he must be someone important, and that we're fools for burning our bridge with him and treating him like a sketchbag. The joke was on us! lol. I also managed to score Skipper an interview with a woman from Resident Advisor when she asked me if I recognized any deejays who were chatting beside the deejay booth. I pointed Skipper out to her, and told her she was an upcoming Toronto deejay who's career there was taking off! After losing it to this, her set was coming to a closure...and that meant that Richie was coming on!! *Richie Hawtin* Opposed to what some people have said, Richie was off the wall. There was a lack of minimal, but lots of crazy techno tracks. It was similar to his set last year; Richie always steals the show at DEMF!! It was extremely predictable, and other than a bunch of top shelf tracks, it didn't exceed my expectations. It would of been nice to hear him experiment a little like he usually does, but other than that I had no complaints. I've never seen a crowd keep up with Richie like that. I don't even recall seeing those levels of dancing last year. The floor was like some kind of battlefield and everyone was giving it their all! I even pulled some moves I didn't know I was capable of. lol. Richie's always dropping fresh tracks and this time was no different. The only track I recall hearing was a deeper vocal track layered on top of John Selway & Christian Smith - Total Departure. I believe it was his last track. Once his set was over I met up with my crew, and as we walked out of the plaza, I met my favourite person from last year!! Mr. Tophat Platform Plasktikman who broke his 12 inch platform last year!!! He was wearing the exact same outfit...and wait for it... he broke that same platform again!! LOL Luckily this time he used black duct tape to hide it better. I love his life! We took a bit of a break and then decided to head over to the first after party of the night shortly after 1 am. [Tronic Treatment & Radio Skool] Paying the price of one party for two is awesome. What's more awesome is accidentally entering through a back door that clearly had a sign which read, "Anyone entering through these doors besides staff will be removed immediately." We walked into the back of the Tronic party where we were greated by a female bouncer. She looked at us and said nothing. She must of thought we were important. Must of been my green rockstar hair! lol. So.. basically I got in to two parties in one venue for free! Awesome. That kind of made up for something else I had lost prior to this after party The venue looked like a grungier version of The Mod Club. The Tronic party was really lacking any vibe. The turnout wasn't that great, which wasn't surprising considering there were more than 10 other afterparties going on. I was disappointed with the line up of deejays up there. Checking out Joris Voorn for the 2nd time this weekend was a pleasure, but since it was another live set I'm not sure he had anymore unheard material of us. Heard a few of the same tracks. Overall a good performance. The only real good thing that came out of that party was hearing Rejected - Cliche Christian Smith came on afterwards and I wasn't too impressed. He played a really hard set that was borderline cheesy for me. Mixing could have been better too.. heard Radio Slave - Grindhouse (Dubfire Terror Planet Mix) again which was cool. He played some of his productions, just not the right ones. Downstairs was where the Radio Skool party was held. It was a smoky, hot basement with strobe lights constantly hitting the dance floor. A lot of people couldn't handle it, and I heard a few people got some injuries, hah. Closing your eyes and finding a good spot seemed to do the trick for me. Dennis Ferrer was playing old school Detroit beats. Lots of Chicago House and groovy house tunes. I'm usually not a huge fan of the genre but was loving it. The vibe in there helped greatly. They closed the place down at 4 am, which left us with nothing to do for a few hours. This was the perfect opportunity to relax and be rockstars until 7 am. What could possibly be happening at 7 am on a Monday morning? [Old Miami] There was no way I was missing this party. Managed to make it last year, but left way too soon. This year we made a pact to last longer. We arrived just after 8 am, at the biker bar turned techno chill out. I remembered it like it was yesterday, but it had been a year. Giant backyard with a couple of hundred folk sitting on the grass grooving. Very chill party, with chill out tunes. Heard some Aretha Franklin, and other older Detroit remixes. This was a bit different than last year, but still sick nonetheless. Didn't recognize any of the deejays playing, but the first dude looked like New York trailer trash. He was wearing a tight t-shirt exposing his gut, with a low cut chest slit, and not to mention his greasy, uncombed hair. Awesome! Didn't run into Magda this time around unfortunately.. There was some dude who was giving out baguettes to everyone. This was my kind of party. It looked like it was going to rain, and it was chilly, but the sun managed to sneak it's way out and scorch us. Couldn't handle the heat anymore, and wanted to rest up after 3 parties, so we called it a night sometime after 11 am. Monday Caught a few hours of sleep and then woke up with a sudden burst of energy. I'm not really sure how my body was still functioning and why I was feeling amazing after all the partying done so far. Got into my blue outfit with blue stars in my hair and was ready to rock. I was called everything from a dolphin to a shark. On our way down we saw the guy outside the festival with his bongo drums that was present last year. Wanted to dance while crossing the street, but didn't want to get shot by passing cars. The festival was quiet on this day; I guess people went home after checking out Richie. There were no new characters that caught my attention, but for some reason the blue theme I had that day drew the most attention from people. I thought the lineup was weak for the closing night, but I ate my words throughout the day. It rained for a few minutes only which I was thankful for. Chilled out by the main stage until 5 or so. *Cassy* She was playing the Main Stage, and it was the first I've heard of her, and she surprised me with a funkier sound. Most of her tracks consisted of vocals, could have been hers, but I'm not sure. Very easy on the ears, and warming to the soul. I was having ADD, so I went off to the Beatport Tent. *David Squillace* Can't remember much from his set, but he did have a late start. Thought he was Burridge at first too. I remember dancing up a storm to some good tunes. It's hard remembering every set! Oh wait...he played.. Guido Schneider - Halo David Squillace - Stomach Flip *Par Grindvik* Made it back to the main stage for Grindvik, whom I was dying to see since his gig was canceled last year. Thought it was a deejay set at first, but after recognizing more than a handful of his productions I realized it was a live set. Everything I expected and more! He was on fire with his tracks, one after the after. It was a nice change to finally hear some real minimal techno on the main stage and not beatport. Let's go through the list.. Par Grindvik - Nand-Grind Par Grindvik - Continue In My Words Par Grindvik & staffan linzatti - 24 Par Grindvik - Ensemble Par Grindvik - Attack Par Grindvik - Surface Par Grindvik - Akustik Par Grindvik - Do Us Part (Len Faki Remix) Why hello there! Caught some Lee Burridge who started late, but unfortunately I didn't have time to spare since I wanted to see Cobblestone Jazz. *Cobblestone Jazz* Ran back to catch a good 20 minute chunk of these guys at the main stage. Love their acid jazzy tech house (pun intended!) They Cobblestone Jazz - Put The Lime In Da Coconut and since it was the only track of theirs I only wanted to hear I ran back to catch some more Lee. Heard some good tunes, and caught a bit of *Josh Wink He was better than the last time at Footwork, where his set consisted of some tech house. Only caught a good 30 mins since he started late but managed to catch Josh Wink - Superfreak Thomas Muller - X Nights I was doing a lot of bouncing between stages and so here I was again.. running back to the main stage to hear my most anticipated producer!.. *Paul Ritch* Possibly my most favourite producer of 2007! I felt honoured to hear him play at the main stage. I tried to convince everyone to come with me and those who did were pleased! Another live set, which meant I'd hear most of my faves! Weeeeeeeeeeeeee! Crowd was digging it, with more people dancing than sitting. Ritch surpassed my expectations with tunes I hadn't heard before...perhaps for a future album release of his. Can't wait!! Paul Ritch - Samba Paul Ritch - Winter Ceremony Paul Ritch - Nordbanhof Paul Ritch - Swartz (almost sounds like GWARTZQW! lol) Preocoop - Ohrwerk (Ritch & Collins Remix) Paul Ritch - Grom All these live sets were making me happy! He didn't play Natural Gun which I was dying to hear, but ah well.. *Dubfire* I decided to check out Dubfire even though my expectations weren't that high. He actually met my low expectations. Nothing new or innovative about his set. I stayed for 6 songs, which sounded the same as the track before, similar structured and all. They were probably tracks or remixes of his.. Same highs and lows with too many buildups. They were far from bad tracks, but he just overdid it for me... *Kevin Saunderson* I finally decided to do a bit of exploring since the whole weekend I've only hung out by the Main and Beatport stages. I found my way underground to the Real Detroit Stage. I had no idea it was held down here this year, and I felt like I was at a completely different place. It was extremely hot, smoky, and had the feel of an old Detroit parking lot party. I made my way to the front where at this point I was itching for a different sound. Kevin delivered. There's a reason why they call it the Real Detroit Stage... Kevin dropped real detroit techno from the 90s...even some acid house. I never held back and smiled as I witnessed him move like a beast behind the decks with his energy. If I had known about this area beforehand I might have spent some more time here... *Speedy J* At first I felt a bit skeptical when I heard that Speedy J was the closing act at the Main Stage. One would expect someone like Richie Hawtin or Jeff Mills to do the job. Well.. Speedy did the job just as awesome as either of these two. Actually, Mills' set last year was horrible in comparison. Hard techno. Really hard techno, without being over the top cheesy. LOVED it! LOVED my demf life 2008 as the flashy lights came on for Speedy's set. Place was crammed. People going apeshit! Dancing on the top of the stairs overlooking the whole stage with downtown Detroit in the background was the best feeling I had all weekend. I was in awe as I flung and lolled my head like a true rockstar! I couldn't stop. Energy levels reached capacity. Last 30 minutes cannot even be explained by me. Last track... Christian Smith & John Selway - Total Departure Great way to close the night! It was sad that it was over..and that 3 days had gone by so fast... Some other tracks that were played but not sure by who.. Raudive - Resistor Phil Kieran - Missp D'Julz - Just So You Know Sebbo - Watamu Beach Joseph Capriati - Candysucker SUMMARY Best weekend of the year! Friends, randoms, and characters all made the festival more memorable. Couldn't have asked to party with a better crew from Toronto. Everything from a group of us doing GWARTZQ! to screaming out I Love My Life 2008. The theme of the year went down incredibly.. Now we wait another 363 days...
