Apparently this is to cover disposal. BTW most items can be disposed of for free privately as there are valuable metals and minerals such as cadium, gold, platinum, silica, and aluminum that can be stripped and sold for a decent price. But dont let the facts get in the way of a new tax for mcguinty, er sorry i mean "surcharge".

I agree with a lot of your points Jay, government's hand-holding and parenting me pisses me off too, but I have to step into this one.

This recycling fee for computers already exists in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, and will become Canada-wide, it's a fait accompli. Nova Scotia will add cellphones and scanners to the program in 2009, and it's only going to widen in the spectrum of electronics types with time.

Like mama always says... If these provinces jumped off a cliff, would you join them? :P

A bad idea is a bad idea.

Perhaps the government should instead make it easier for the public to find recyclers from the private sector. Send out a flyer with a centralized list of private retailers who will pick up your junk for free. Charge the retailers for the advertisement that this would give them. Everyone wins!

But the idea here isnt environmental, its just simply a new tax.

On this note I agree with Jay, tap water is garbage, a lot of research supports that fluoride in tap water can cause cancer, thyroid problems and various other things. Plus the smell is revolting, i live in downtown London and the smell of all the chemicals in the water makes it gross to drink, and i don't want to think about what's in the old pipes the water goes through.

As for the Electronics "recycling fee", it's already implemented in BC, Alberta, and Nova Scotia so it's just a matter of time before it's everywhere.

Regardless, electronics prices have been steadily falling in the last few years. A $40 increase is not going to have much effect in the general cheapening of electronics. You just won't notice how fast desktops are going down in price as much, that's all.

You miss the point. The government has no business collecting $40 or 40 cents. It's a tax that serves no purpose. And $40 is a lot of money. These days its about an 1/8 of a tank of gas!! LOL!!

BTW the quote of the year from the toronto star. They were talking about mayor miller's take on plastic bags. They had also noted that china is banning them starting June 1.

They said "In Toronto, Mayor David Miller noted the city doesn't have as much authority as the Chinese government."

So Miller doesnt have the same power as an unelected communist dictatorship? Go figure! Not for a lack of trying though!

I just hand my cheque over to my MP and tell them if there is anything left to donate it to the Human Fund

I dunno about Toronto but here in Oakville, we got this new green bin (with a lock on the top) for all food waste.. I find this to be the next step in recycling... There should actually be like 4 to 5 bins with different colours.. one for metal(cans), plastic(bottles), food waste, and anything hazardous (such as electronics)

Water with iron and calcium is the best. No flouride. Pure H20 is actually bad for you because it robs your body of minerals. i drink non florinated bottled water for the simple fact that i dont want to drink cancerous chemicals such as flouride and chlorine. But again, thats my choice. You dont see me advocating the banning of tap water right?
