From what I gather on Telenav's site, you either have to have a phone with a GPS receiver built in, or you have to use a Bluetooth GPS receiver. It merely pulls down the map data (the tiles) from the mobile provider's data network... I think.

correct. my 8310 only downloads data when using gps when it needs to refresh the map.
