You may want to try Unknown Device Identifier and see if it can give you the device info and then you google your drivers not having to go thru IBM. Also instead of updated drivers see if you can search IBM's support site for original drivers and not any updated ones. They should be good enough to at least get you online to get the rest of the drivers on there.
I also have the old ones I have used in my previous HD formats or cleaning, those old one don't work either.
Yes, I did google, but I'm a tad skeptical towards downloading drivers from unknown or not well known sources.

Does SP3 require a 'verified' copy of XP in order to install it? Only my laptop has a proper copy
And, do I really want SP3 at all? What advantages does it have?

The next thing i would try would be to get it on the internet one of two ways. From the device manager shots you showed, you already installed the wireless drivers so if you have wifi get it online and head to the microsoft updates website and see if that'll detect the missing ethernet drivers.
Another way to get it online that might cost you a few dollars is to go to your local electronics store and buy a usb to ethernet converter/card. That would allow you to get online with a hardwire and then you can proceed to go to the ms update website. an example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16833156133

SP3 slipstreamed into the CD allows you to install without a cd key! Oh and they quit blacklisting keys after sp1. It was too much of a customer service nightmare.
Al: Thanks. Try this download this driver and try it. It is dated this year. See if it detects it in there. If not, do this. Change the radio button to: "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install". Force it to find the driver that you need it to use. If that doesn't work, then time to get a pcmcia lan card. I haven't seen them in ages, but I am sure they still exist.

Did you say you recently updated to a new BIOS? That could be the problem there.. I know newer BIOS versions are supposed to fix problems, but you may have an odd case and it may be worth it to hunt down the previous BIOS version that came with the laptop. After going back to the original BIOS, try the XP install again.
oh shit, I did actually post in here, I thought it was a bad dream!!
People really do give a shit about IT problems, abortions & anal intrusion

haha no. A BIOS update doesn't effect the networking portion. That is controlled by a separate chip.

That happened because this is not a genuine thread. I know that because the original title had one extra V!

I hate to point out the obvious but just making sure, I apologise if this sounds patronising...
On your screenshots you are pointing the install location to the executable rather than the location you have extracted the actual driver files to. I presume this was just to show the info on the properties tab of the file?
