Ambisonic sound would be fun to get into, but it would be a hassle trying to set up a studio with four speakers in the corners on the floor and another four speakers in the corners on the ceiling. And keeping the mixing desk out of the way of everything. Maybe a chair and a laptop would be best for this kind of mixing?

you can do surround... but... why?
if you're doing trance music, it would be for presentation at a rave or club event...
dj mixers do not have surround sound... they're 2 channels...
this being said, there are some vsti synths such as absynth 4 which have support for surround sound within the synthesis engine.

I think you need to route every channel to a single output on your audio interface if you want more than 8 channels or so, but panning the audio across multiple channels like this is going to be a lot of work this way.
Back to answering your question: You can create a surround bus in Nuendo. The Nuendo surround panning plugin let's you choose your setup. It displays it like it's looking at you from above. So you get a 2d representation of where your speakers are. Theres a dot/locator in the middle, you can just slide it towards where you want the sound to be located and the plugin calculates the volumes necessary on each speaker to give the sound the location as it has in the plugin It's really simple to use.
Yeah this is how most of this stuff works, but for more than 4 or so channels this becomes impossible. Thats why I think he's going to have to use Max/msp, because he seems to want to be able to "draw" a shape on the screen and have it play from the speakers along a wall. Interesting idea, could be fun in an art gallery installation or something like that...

yep you got the idea, this is an artistic project. We're trying to get the stuff we need and then we will try things to make it work. Obviously I dont know much about surround sound, nuendo, max msp and so on ... but I will learn that.
(To be honest the full project will need 200 speakers )
