even if most of europe speaks english, more people speak mandarin.

the chinese do encourage learning english, but the salaries offered are not beneficial enough to draw native english speakers there to teach in big enough numbers. In 5 years this will be a very different case.

Yeah, the world is changing, but a few years ago, they never taught german, spanish etc at schools, only french & latin, a generation later, we've moved on lots, so we'll see how things go.

From a cost-benefit point of view I'd say Italian, though. I know a friend who's invested 2 years in an intensive Mandarin language course and afterwards went to live in Wuhan, China for one year, and his Mandarin is still on basic to very simple everday level, still not able to fully read papers etc. Whereas if you had spent 3 years on Italian you could read works by Umberto Ecco or Dante and learn Danish on the side.

I'd say go for Russian. Hard, yes, but manageable and definitely very helpful. Cyrillic is a matter of 1-2 months till you read fluently...grammar is a bitch at first, but after half a year that's mostly understood as well.

Learning Chinese would be useful for knowing what those bastards are saying about you on the subway.
