same thing happened to us last year from like July-Dec, the internet would randomly die or go into some time warp 14.4k zone IF it managed to connect to anything at all. Finally we got sick of it, called up Comcast and told them our modem was broken. They replaced it with a new one and once they set it up everything was fine. How old is the modem? People always blame the router first, but your modem can cause problems or die too and nobody ever remembers to mention it.

one of those weird setups where router=modem; i just started service last june, so i don't THINK it would be busted already, but i'll probably just end up calling, complaining, giving the usual, "i will switch to comcast if you guys don't make this work" and then they'll send me a new one

yeah I just mention it because it sounds very similar to what was happening to us. we even replaced our router before I guessed it might be the modem. I'd call and ask if you can get a new one as a start and if that doesn't fix it go from there.

I'm going to recommend the obvious answers first: Have you power cycled and if so, have you reset the modem to factory settings. Sometimes that'll help and will tell you pretty quickly if its a hardware problem or an issue with the way the router/modem is set up.

I would try those first, make sure you have all your account information on hand so you can set up the modem again if you do the reset on your own. there is usually a reset button on the physical router or you may also find some in the router config page.
