Turkey now only needs a draw against the czech. The czech need to win. (edit: this is wrong, I got mistaken by the commentators, both teams are level in goal-average, I don't know what happens if they draw)

exactely what i was thinking once the game ended. Turkey and Cz. Rep. both have 4 points and a goal difference of 2-3. When level on points the result of the direct confronatations counts, then goal difference, then the number of goals scored. All three criteria will be level if they draw.... guess they'll flip a coin like in the old days.

According to our commentators the team with higher coefficient from the last two qualifications (WC 06, EURO 08) would go through.

Nah, it'd be decided by penalties, no extra time.

Although in the past, it would of went as far as bookings if they couldn't be separated on points or goals.

This was actually a poor game right up until it started pissing with rain, then it became laughably entertaining, especially when the Turkish keeper flew out of his goal on his arse for the first goal and ended up at the edge of the box.

Good, entertaining match in the second half with both teams going for it in the last 20. Thought a draw would of been a fair result.

from the regulations of the uefa euro football championship

quote:

EQUALITY OF POINTS AFTER THE GROUP MATCHES

rule 7.07

if two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the matches in their group, the following criteria will be used to determine the rankings in the order given:

a) number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;

b) goal difference in the matches among the teams in question;

c) number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

d) goal difference in all grou pmatches;

e) number of goals scored in all the group matches;

f) coefficient from the qualifying competitions for the 2006 FIFA world cup and 2006/08 UEFA European Football Championship (points obtained divided by the number of matches played);

g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournamet);

h) drawing of lots.

rule 7.08

if two teams which have the same number of points, the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still equal at the end of that match, the ranking of the two teams in question will be determind by kicks from the penalty mark, provided no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches. should more than two teams have the same number of points, the crtieria listed under paragraph 7.07 a) to h) will apply.

since turkey and czech republic are playing each other as the last match, i think rule 7.08 supersedes 7.07.

I suspect this match will be as exciting as watching paint dry then. Both team's will likely be edgy, tentative and wait for the other to make a mistake.

Penalties it is then!

both home teams (swiss/aus) are going to be eliminated in group phase

i'm glad turkey won, though, i was waiting for one of the teams to win as i just couldn't imagine it ending a tie. especially when it started raining.
