On the bus: some naive girl sitting next to me getting 'picked up' by somekind of 16 year old guido she'd never met before using the whole "my friend runs a modelling buisness" trick.

In the subway: an obviousely high man opening the "DO NOT CROSS" doors while the train was in motion at top speed and litterally jumping from car to car. Come to think of it, I probably should've tried to stop him. Oh well.

People like that don't need advice or help, they need a kicking.

I'm proud to say I've puked on at least 5 platforms, 3 trains, 2 buses and a ferry.

Marking territory, you know?

and they didn't have any cleaning supplies on the train so the conductor just covered my green puke pile with newspapers.

-The worst case of OCD I've ever seen. Beyond textbook.
-Gay sex at the other end of the train.
-Straight sex on a bus.
-A dog with only front legs and a wagon for his ass.

i think the pinnacle was
an old woman that smelled like piss, with a bad wig on, COVERED in some sort of powder. i dont think it was coke though. she had a bag full of about 10 bottles of half-empty liquor and beer, and she'd shake her head violently, dislodging her wig and sending up clouds of this powder every time.
she asked the bus driver when we would get to philadelphia, when the bus ONLY runs in philadelphia and it was pretty obvious that's where we were.

I get on the train and this guy across from me takes his wallet out of his pocket. He holds his wallet flat and using what could only be described as a windwill-type move, places it carefully on his right knee.

He claps his hands.

He flips it open, removes his metropass, extends his metropass in his hand to full-arms length, looks at it, appears to make a mental note and does another windmill to place it back in his wallet.

He claps his hands.

He then picks up his wallet in his right hand and puts it back in his pocket.

He claps his hands.

He continued to do this, with perfect and consistent timing, for the duration of my 20-minute train ride. I would guess he was doing one cycle every ten seconds or so. Absolutely incredible to watch.

I'm sitting in the library, trying not to LOL. I also have a little gas, so I'm attempting not to lose hold of that, either.

as a nyc subway rider of almost 20 years -- on numerous lines and at all hours of the day and night -- i've seen it all.

-- guy loading a rifle on a 4 train in the bronx at 6:30 am.
-- the mentally disturbed shitting on seats (latest was 2 weeks ago on the R).
-- crazy black lady that would ride the pre-rush hour D naked in the bronx.
-- in high school, a guy on the D we'd nicknamed "mr sticky" who in a daily ritual would open his briefcase on his lap in a poor attempt to hide his jerking off to high school girls.
-- numerous beatings and a few slashings.
-- guy in a backless hospital gown and draw-string baggies as slippers looking confused on the A.
-- legless torso guy who maneuvered around the 4-train via skateboard getting harassed by cruel kids who tried stepping on the back of his board to knock him off.
-- very homeless-looking guy pulling a laptop out of a hobo rucksack and typing away.
-- motorman and conductor inadvertently having a private discussion over the PA system about a passenger who or may not have been dead.
-- tons of hilarious/odd beggars, entertainers and peddlers

i could go on for days.

Bombay local trains, rated amongst the best in the world for punctuality but amongst the worst in terms of safety. In a nutshell:

1. Trains have no doors, so the entrances are open, and people hang out of them clutching a handrail overhead. Saw a kid who was doing so get bashed in the head by an electricity pole that was too close at 100 km/h, and miraculously he didnt fall off, but his whole head had been re-arranged. His eyes and nose and mouth were all in weird positions and he asked us why we were staring at him, presumably he was in shock at the time, i dont know. Scariest thing I've ever seen.

2. Terrorist attack on 9 separate bogeys and I was in one of the trains but not in the bogey that had the bomb in it. Absolutely deafening sound, dead bodies everywhere, broken limbs, blood, the works. Still get jittery when stepping onto a train

3. Was walking on an overhead platform when a train came in and as it was leaving, people (as is the custom) jump in and out. One chap got caught between the train and the platform and fell in and the whole train went over his leg. Medics came rushing in as he was screaming in pain, put him on a stretcher and carried his leg to the hospital.

Trains in Bombay are efficient but are the most dangerous public transport I have ever heard of. No one takes responsibility for train safety and things just keep rolling on, as if a number of people dying on their way to work every single day is just part of the routine
