Don't you get a room with a lock? Just lock your room at all times while you aren't in it, and try to refrain from getting so shitfaced that you leave the door wide open while you pass out in the bathtub.

Alternatively, get some flight cases that you can padlock.

Locking your door will do little when your room mate is there and brings a bunch of shit faced, shady friends over while your in class or out somewhere. Too many stories of gear that has disappeared from dorms.

I mean an individual bedroom with it's own individual lock.

i had my dj gear in my dorm room for two years with two different roomates and not once did i have a problem. Having the turntables in the room was a great way to break the ice during freshman year and makes room parties more fun.

On a final note, most people make roomates to be a lot worse than they really are. I mean, if you are anti-social and sit in your room all day, of course you guys will hate each other. However, if you are barely in the room and are only there to sleep and possibly relax for a second or two, you should be fine. People like having space, and as long as you don't blatantly trying to sabotage your roomates living experience, your roomate should be fine and willing to respect your equipment.

I don't know about your DJ equipment, but I had my PS2 and guitar stolen from my room when I lived in the dorms. Other than that make sure you go to class. It is the easiest thing to do and makes the biggest difference.

Having graduated from college, I couldn't agree with that statement more.

is it a dorm you're moving into or an apartment? some of those dorms you won't even be able to walk around in if you dump all your gear in there.

From my experience it helps if you can talk to you roommate before the school year begins so you can find out what they are like. Sharing a room is not a big deal at all if you just communicate and ac civilized.

I only suggested not bringing your gear due to lack of space. At my school there is not nearly enough room to have a mixer and cdjs/turntables in any of the rooms.

The dorm I was in was small only things large we can fit in there was 1 large dorm fridge and tv and 1 computer other then that it is cramped with 2 people. Later I moved into single then I was able bring my DJ gear but I didn't until I moved off campus to house with 4 others and used my gear there for parties.
