I would definately add velocity on the snare... Not on the kick though usually unless its in a big kick buildup or something.

Mostly just for hats and tambourine when I use it. Although a lot of other lines have been known to use velocity modulation. It all depends on the flavor.

And yes, I consider it very important to making something sound right.

I find for a more tribal beat and feel velocity helps alot.
Not on the K---K---K---K but more K--kK---K--kK
