- Gateways are shit. Agreed with Mike.

- Both ram and CPU (processor) are critical. If either one are slow, your system will be slow. Your CPU handles every single component in your computer along with doing lots of operations, if this is slow, your whole system is. Ram is important for applications, basically, to make them run faster and load quicker.

- It's a total memory hog. It is the way it pages ram. Most applications get a lot of ram which is why you see much usage, however when a memory intensive application comes in, Vista dumps the ram into the page file freeing for that application. It's not as bad as you think.

32bit uses up to 4.
64bit uses 4+.

- Core 2 Duo is an amazing proc.

- anyway, you don't need much power at all. 1GB (2gb ideal) min ram, get a nice dual core proc, phenoms, core 2 duos, anything with dual core will be good enough for your usage. worry about hd space. with what you want to do, you dont need to spend an arm and leg on it. so i think you'd be happy with your purchase. id suggest an HP though.

First of all, that extended warranty plan is an absolute ripoff. You already have a 1 yr manufacturer warranty, and the way technology prices keep dropping, you will likely be able to buy an equally powered laptop 3 years from now for the price you paid for the warranty alone. It's not worth it.

If you insist on having a 3 year warranty, I found a MUCH better deal for you. It's $300 cheaper AND it's faster than your machine:

Just make sure you uninstall all the messenger programs and other junkware Dell bundles with most PCs. Once you do that, it will be blazing.

thanks for the input... this is why i post this in the c0r to get feedback...

a couple things though...
1st- i got the service plan b/c it covers accidental drops and/or damage i cause to it... which the Dell plan does and me going to Iraq again I can forsee something of this magnitude happening
2nd- there was not an option for any hard drive space over 120GB and i need at least 200GB and cant use an external HD b/c I'll be moving it around from time to time and space is very very limited, plus I wont exactly be using it on a desk or such surfaces to accomidate extra wires...
3rd- that screen is 15in where i like the 15.4widescreen

good input... keep it coming

Are you sure you'll need more than 120GB? Honestly? I download tons of music, movies, and porno on my 120GB and I still have 30GB left.

120 gigs is plenty of space for pretty much anything.

Symantec is no good. I've used both the Corperate and the Home editions for awhile.

NOD32 or Avast.
Kaspersky is pretty good as well.

Im going to say no on the Gateway. I know a lot of people that had bad experience with them back in the day. In fact, I didnt even know they made computers anymore. I thought they'd given that up.
