as for 1015... when you think of the best parties there, and what made those nights great, you see that the club has a lot of potential. and i can very easily have a great time there on all sort of nights. it's sad to see things to change there so quickly that you know its internal decisions and not so much the scene around. the issues have been discussed all over these boards, but i will agree that this is a bit of a low point for the club at the moment.

I usually have a bad time at clubs but for whatever reason, it was the best experience I've ever had... it was for the Tiesto event on May 23rd and the Ferry Corsten afterparty when Tiesto showed up on May 24th... maybe they were on top of their game because it was the 8th anniversary of Ruby Skye or something but yeah, it was my first time there that weekend and things couldn't have gone better (except for the AC) and the sound wasn't too bad either... I always have those foam earplugs just incase... anywhere I go but usually at Avalon, I can go there without em and still get my hearing back an hour later.

I stayed with a friend from Union City who also says great things about Ruby Skye but from the perspective of a local, I have no idea how things go weekly for you guys.

Well have things changed since then? Prior to that, I heard only great things about the place and would easily go up there again based on the past performance but if theres something otherwise, let us know too!

Down here, its almost always a great time at Avalon and like many have mentioned before, easy to get in

yes, a lot of the things you mention are true to an extent. but i can also counter argue every point you've made. long long lines even if you have pre-sales. occasionally unbearably loud and too much bass. yay, a laser twice a year! all the douche-bags standing 4 deep against the bars. cold AC only for the dozen people lucky enough to be standing up front. balcony's being VIP, so absolutely NO place to sit anywhere in the club. no other rooms to go to if the headliner ends up being crap, a pretty regular closing time of 4am.......

i like ruby skye, love it some nights and not so much others. so my points above are just to put some of your comments into perspective.

more often than not, unless there are one or two things that really get in the way of me having a good time, with good friends and a great dj, i can have a good time almost anywhere.

Beyond that, WTF you say abotu the Ten15 booth? The DJ booth (where the DJ actually is) is the BEST i've ever seen..in any club I've been to around the world....and it's something a lot of DJs say they really like. It has an modern/megaclub feel, but very intimate at the same time...and if it gets too crazy they can create some seperation by raising the front plexi glass a bit.

I think the geren room area of the booth could be reworked ....and both sides could be used. I would use the back corner of the balcony area to setup the lighting system/control. But it'd also mean that dedicated ilghting peeps would always have to be up there and no rotate random people in there like I see a lot (eg. a resident DJ hopping on so the lighting person can go do something). Anyhow, point is the central part of the booth is teh bomb...it could be improved like doing something with the circlue behind the DJ...put screens, special lighting, etc....or someting. Also, modify the overhang to loko a bit more modern and in line with the rest of the booth. The overhang is OLLLLLD compaerd to the rest of the booth.

I utterly refuse to go to Ruby Skye ever again for anyone less than Ricardo Villalobos, and that's only because he NEVER plays in the US so I'd consider it a can't-miss, venue be damned kind of thing. Terrible club with a worse crowd, completely missed the point on what makes a venue fun. To call it the best club in SF is just really a mistake, even other douchebag watering holes like Temple and Vessel are probably better. But I digress....

I've only been to 1015 a relatively few times but I've enjoyed myself each time. First time ever was for Bassnectar on Chinese New Year last year, that party was fucking insane. Great decoration, burner vibe, good music in every room, and HOT women everywhere. My friends who had been there before warned me it wasn't a typical night and the place usually was decent but not outstanding. Didn't return for a long time mostly cause I kept missing Evil Breaks parties and nothing else particularly interesting to me got booked. Most recently I made it out for Tenaglia and the M_nus party this spring and both were great events though honestly 1015 could have done a better job. So here goes from my limited experience, a few suggestions:

get rid of the projector screens. pet peeve in general and I've never seen them put to use that I didn't consider just distracting but not particularly interesting.

get rid of the blatant red bull advertising. other pet peeve of mine is obnoxiously visible advertising of any sort in a venue, it just destroys the idea that you're not walking into a business establishment but into a place kept open by people who fucking love to party just as much as you do. Even if that's not true, the illusion helps.

get a better sound engineer and make them be present during gigs. hopefully someone who's actually trained in how to make a sound system sound good will clear up a lot of the problems, because it's not a bad system to begin with it's just used badly. especially in the whole "turn it up as loud as possible until it's clipping and/or distorting" thing when the headliner for the night comes on (to be fair, DT brought his own engineer it looked like and until he had to leave at like 8am the system sounded crisp and clear).

bigger smoking area with less sound isolation and/or OUTDOOR smoking area would be great

the door molestation has lessened but it would help me enjoy the place more if they let me bring my weed inside OR allowed ins and outs so I can go smoke outside their premises if they prefer.

lasers are much more interesting if there's more than 1 and not all of them are green.

having the lines for the bathroom and the passageways between rooms in the same spot isn't good planning.

needs better AC even with the cryo, I dance a lot but damn it feels like I'm dripping sweat after 20 minutes every time I go there.

overall I don't think it's a bad place, but it's only sufficient and nothing special the way it stands now. just my $.02

I came to Ruby Skye for the Ferry Corsten afterparty and I left afterwards wondering why there isn't a better place in San Francisco to club at. I mean... coming from Minnesota... out of all places... I would say that we have 3-4 clubs that are better than Ruby Skye.

1. The wait in line was long as hell even though we had pre-sales. The only thing that saved us was cutting in line. I felt sorry for all the other people that probably stood there for atleast 2 hours.
2. I was next to the A/C the whole night... WTF? Can't they have the A/C coming down from the ceiling and not the damn ground right next to the dancefloor? I was uncomfortable as hell.
3. The BASS was turned on too damn loud. I could hear no highs and little mids while Ferry was playing.
4. For me, I thought the design of the club was atrocious. Basically a DJ booth in the middle of a stage. And to be honest, the club itself looked pretty bare. I wasn't impressed at the fact that I was partying in an old ass theatre room.

Not to mention I felt like I was going to get mugged to and from the parking lot, but that's a subject for another day.

There are times when they setup the dj booth crowd level and it makes everything so much better! like at eric prydz but ya still needs a real crowd level dj booth much like 1015 IMO

There are better places than Ruby in SF, you just didnt go to them. Mighty, Vessel, End Up and 1015 (when there isnt hip hop in the main room ) to name a few.

Dave

Well, I've heard big complaints about the booth and monitors from some pretty big DJs that have played there recently and thats why I brought it up. The place didn't impress me either.

Based on alot of the stuff said about Ruby Skye, I guess I just happened to be at the right place and the right time but I did come with several others who had a great experience as well so next time, I guess I'll take everything mentioned into consideration just incase it is completely different than the first time!

First of all - +1 for Mighty, I really hope Spundae uses Mighty more often. Unfortunately it is just to small for a major headliner, however for events like Schultz on a Sunday or surprise appearance of Armin on a Wednesday you really can't beat it.

Ruby Skye in general has it's act together with security. They blew it for A&B, waited outside for over an hour and didn't get in till almost 1am. However, this was was unusual and I give them props for letting in all the pre-sale people in first AND I did not have presales!! I normally do and get pissed off when GA gets in faster than presales. The AC obviously works fine there also, it was absolutely packed for A&B and the place was as cold as a meat locker; I'm scared to think of how it was up front. Lastly, if you have only been to Ruby Skye for the after party for Popsikle w/ Ferry and the surprise appearance Tiesto then I doubt you really know how the sound system is. Of course I don't know what you may or may not have taken, but if you were on a substance then you probably thought they should have turned up the sound system louder. Partying sober at Ruby Skye can be very PAINFUL.

As for 1015, which is what I started this thread for I want to add some more comments. I don't mind the bouncers molesting everyone, that area of town can be shady. They keep the place as safe as possible and though profiling is bad in general I don't mind that they keep questionable people out. When a fight breaks out, they are all over it with the quickness and have pulled people off of me for looking in there direction. I do have issues with there sound engineer not always being there and not having the sound system properly tuned for the type of music to be played, but in general they have been fairly good. I do recall when Menno was in town the sound system was completely whacked, I suspect it was because they had a live band playing the night before and they didn't re-tune everything for Menno.

I am saddened by the fact that headliners appear to be leaving 1015 and moving to Ruby Skye. Whether you like 1015 or Ruby Skye I think it is good for the scene to have multiple big clubs to keep the competition going. With a few exceptions, when headliners come to town they go to Ruby Skye now...
