ive been getting my girlfriend into techno and house music lately. she has always hated the music before, but says the stuff i have shown her is different. we went clubbing not long ago, it was tech/minimal, and she hated it. when we got home i put on a sven vath set and she loved it, its still in her cd player in her car right now. i ask "i thought you hated this music?", she says "that night we went out, that music was too monotonous, but this stuff is much better, its more interesting".
i think to turn people on to this music, they need to hear a proper good dj play it, not just the local dj on a regular night.
it has to do with music scenes: she took me to see a band she likes "black angels", it was horrible, she liked it, everyone there liked it, but i thought it sucked. no one was dancing, they were just staring at the band play this heroin noise type stuff, and then applauding at the end of each song or during a breakdown. the reason is that is the rock scene, you have to be in that scene and listen to that music all the time to like the not as good stuff. techno falls into the scene phenomenon too. people listen to only rock they fall into a rut creatively. people that only listen to techno fall the same fate and become less creative as well.
