if you're using ableton for edits only (no "real" production) then tbh i don't think it matters a whole lot what soundcard you use. someone pro correct me if i'm wrong though. your onboard sound is probably good enough.

it has enough inputs and such for me because everything I use is software. but … alasssss, it sucks major ass. Didn’t have a problem with it for like the first six months and now it’s just a pain. you guys are killing me but not reading everything, lol. I do use it for production to, remember that track rob played of mine when we were in M-Town?

yeah I am getting kind of tired with cashews as well. Lately I have been on a pistachio kick.

no offense but i was under the assumption that elevation did the grunt work for that track.. isn't that what you said the last time i spoke with you?

anyways i never thought that ableton was the best platform to produce on (with the exception of it being a good sequencer) in the first place so i can't really help you out on that. what exactly is wrong with your audiophile other than the fact that it crashes consistently? are you looking for internal or external?

from the production studio i hear echo audiofire 4 or 8 firewire is a good buy

i know we have talked about it, its used for edits and production. i have been using ableton since version 2.0 and know how to use it like a champ. no reason to change now.

i used Logic when I still had my mac. personally logic is sweet but ableton is just about as good. the only major difference I have when working with them is the audio quality in ableton sucks compared to logic. i guess each person has a program they like, some people like cubase, reason, logic, protocols. just a matter of finding what works for you.

since 2.0? daaaamnnn!

if you are not doing any audio recording or do not need a box that will fan you out into multiple outs (for like djing with ableton or outputing to an external hardware mixer etc), then you dont need a soundcard other than the one that came with your computer...

the reason for this is all your mixing down is done within the computer anyway...you are staying all "1's and 0's" and as long as your computer can handle "1's and 0's" its only going to handle it as good as the mixdown algorithm of whatever program you are mixing down in.

logic, for me, has the best mixdown algorithm...however ableton is like second nature to me for chopping, audio editing, and general fucking around...so i rewire ableton into logic, and get the best of both worlds.

hope this helps.

Mathias, once you sort your audio interface issues out, I highly recommend this killer VST for your Ableton setup.

its the best one i have used. i'm not aware of one that sounds as good, has better converters or preamps, or is as rock solid. it's also the best value on the dollar, compared to the rme fireface 800 and the apogee ensemble.

how does anyone have an opinion on anything, a combination of real world experience and other peoples opinions.

had been in the same situation and heard good things about the firebox & echos, but wound up giving in & shelling out the extra bit of cash for the motu. aside from some annoyances with trying to use it as a regular sound card (irony), I'm glad I went that route. I know I won't need to upgrade for a long time.
