I would never personally buy Numark, Behringer, Gemini, Citronic or KAM for DJing purposes, when worked hard it shortens the life considerably.
Behringer do make some ok compressors and limiters though but that's their studio line.
However,
It's all down to the budget that someone has to work with (i.e. how much cash they can make available at any one time)and to be fair, even the most basic of mixers can teach someone the standard skills they need to have.
The thing that outshines the cheaper brands with the high end stuff is durability and sound quality. That said, sound quality wise you are only going to sound as good as your cheapest piece of gear, it's all links in the chain. A lot of people have very nice mixers but suffer due to crap monitors, amps or even soundcards thesedays.
With the high end stuff, it lasts and has a much better resale value/desirability.
It's not rocket science. But even if you did just want to buy some cheap gear, it's all you need to get started and most of the skills are transferable to club installations. The difficulty could be if you are going to play live and have your sound card built in to your mixer which means you would have to take that along and work off that.
Foor for thought.
Cheers
