Ok... I guess this was already discussed a while ago but didn't even survive on the forums. I agree with a lot of comments from the old thread and this one. Maybe this music conference is too late to compete with the others around the world and a Toronto based event could be more successful. I'd even be happy with a strictly Canadian DJ lineup. Tons of great talent across the country.
... wait a sec. Since the Destiny guys aren't doing WEMF lets get them to throw TEMF. World and Toronto are interchangeable words anyway... ha ha... {;op

I actually felt sorry for one of the guys from the Summer Music Conference as I saw him at an event he was doing at the venue I work at.
Long story short, seems like a few local promoters kinda screwed him over by over promising and under delivering (in this business you always under promise and over deliver, not the other way around.
If it was a local conference with the key idea to support the Toronto scene and local talent, I think it would have fared better. By calling it SMC, and having virtually no headliners, killed it dead really fast.

BUT... i gotta say something.. so I'll keep it short and sweet.
poorly executed
poorly promoted
unoriginal
not well thoughtout
Is their really a need for another music conference? There's already Miami, Amsterdam, Montreal, Las Vegas, Ibiza.. and lets not forget San Fran which already had the SMC name first FFS! I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting about to...
I don't understand the point or purpose of "SMC"
+1
so much for this .. who ever said it earlier that this was all hype and no substance was pretty much spot on.. it goes down in the annals of other failed conference "wannabe" events here in Toronto like the International Dance Summit which just took place a couple of years ago (I'm sure most of you are thinking - what Dance Summit? - Exactly.)
There's so much great talent in this city, you'd think the promoters could think up something more original than this. Toronto missed the whole 'conference' boat years ago. Let's try and be creative for once and make something that's truly unique to the city rather than trying to recycle old ideas which seem to have already been played out long ago.
Kudos to the organizers of Breaks, Beats, and Culture .. 5 years running and showing more promise each year.

i was there...
nothing to add that hasn't been said.
went to see a friend of mine play (DJ Kosmic) and he did a standup job to an empty room. The confusion that occured after his set was upsetting to see. Its easy to point blame in this business but the bottom line is you reap what you sow.
well according to the organizers, it was a "huge success" .. so much so in fact that astonishingly they've even planned another one for next year!

Thank you to everyone who attended the SMC!
Overall this year has been a huge success, planting the seeds in Toronto and creating a force that will help to support all music in the region for years to come.
Next year's conference will start July 22nd to 26th 2009 - be there!
