Well, ive gone through all the settings in my BIOS and there is nothing extra I can do to increase the speed of the fan. I have everything set to 100%, ive tried loading the motherboard's utility programs to see what can be done, but they are all based (including the BIOS) on a traget temperature - that temperature being 40 oC. I think the problem may be with the cooler, as it is a 3-pin type and during my brief bit of research, it appears that 3-pin fans cannot have thier speed controlled, only 4-pin fans can be, so this may be the problem as my fan is never going above 2500 rpm.

The motherboard is an ASUS Crosshair (Republic Of Gamers), and the cooler is a coolermaster (not sure of exact model, but a couple years old now)

I think if I carry on without any changes im going to end up with a fried cpu, knackered motherboard or both!

Anybody know of a decent cooler for the AM2 platform ?

If its a stock cooler it should have a max speed at around 5500 rpm.

It is just not possible to keep it cool running only at 2500 rpm.

Check if Cool N Quiet is off or on.

cool'n'quiet is disabled and fan boost is enabled. Like I say, its a coolermaster fan.

Alright then, the fan prolly has a max speed of 2500 rpm, ah of course, the BE doesnt come with a stock cooler, didnt think of that.

And keep in mind, the 5000 Black Edition is meant for overclocking, which means with a good fan you can get it to 3 GHZ easily.

Yes, thats another story the overclocking! I did try it several months ago following some of the articles describing how to go about it, but I just couldnt get the same kind of results. I forget the exact details now, but if I remember rightly mine was starting with a higher voltage than what the reviews where saying ? :S (for example, the article was saying take the voltage from 1.4v to 1.7v, whereas mine was already at 1.7v, therefore reducing my overclocking potential - dont take the figure literal, it's just an example)

With regards to the cooler, I was thinking of http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=405603 (im in the UK), but the "Average Fan Speed : 2650" concerns me somewhat.

That just means that ur voltage is way too high. The default voltage should be 1.4, whereas yours is at 1.7, you can safely turn down the voltage to 1.4 and maybe you dont even need to buy a new fan either.

I have my voltage set at 1.375 and my CPU is alot hotter than urs since mine is 90nm whereas yours is 65nm and generates less heat.

The default voltage should be 1.35 v and even with that you can overclock it to 3 GHZ, so if ur voltage is wrong, you might get lucky and save you that new cooler.

Well, looking at the review on tomshardware ( http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...ker,1708-2.html ), they have a voltage of 1.344 @ 2.6GHz, my voltage is 1.392v @ 2.6GHz.
