Maybe that's just me, but this thread kinda lost me RJT....(and I realize it can be hard to translate your feeling about something on the interwebs).

Not sure if this is related to a 2007 artcile which struck me back then http://www.emusic.com/features/spot...281_200703.html
(although I realize some points in Sherburne's article may not be as relevant this year)

Yeah - it's really my fault, because I think I've completely failed at conveying what I wanted to here.

That article ties it up nicely though - and I guess the notion that I feel a lot of "nostalgia" when listening to loads of new music, and that it's a kind of nostalgia I hadn't really felt prior.

Bleh - probably even more confusing now. I like old noises.

the racist answer to this phenomenon is:

when white europeans try to make black techno and house, they end up with trance or prog, whether they're ripping it off for the first time, or the nth time

everyone trying to make a return to the 'old school' now falls into the same trap that the early trance producers did when they tried to make detroit techno

So this thread was only a rant because you're getting older and dont want to....?

So my advice is buy a corvette and cruise for 16 year olds. Oh wait, you might not be 55 yet...

Up till like 2004-2005, trance was trance to me, since then alot of what has been called trance has sounded more proggy, like the songs would all just build up to nothing (though the old trance sound does indeed seem to be re-emerging).

There's nothing wrong with trying to differentiate between all the real and imagined genres and sub-genres of EDM, just so long as you don't get so wrapped up in the genre label that you forget about the music.
