i just downloaded ad aware and avg. they found about 13 trojan downloaders and other nasties. how could these have got on there without me going on the types of websites they are usually associated with? the copy of xp was un updated and i was running with no antivirus. i been online once for about 10 mins. i was only on ebay !

could these have been stored on the external broadband modem from previous dirty surfing on my other computer and jumped over? im amazed how this new pc had so many.

ps. it was a formatted hard drive

I got on this thread too late but I remember there was a virus that disabled the start button. There have also been reports of virus' that can live in the bios, but it's highly doubtful that they can be stored in the modem. If you inserted any disks, memory sticks or external drives, there can be virus' on them (the mem stick got me last time).

If you plan to use this PC for music (properly), then reformat all drives (after backing up), install fresh XP, install antivirus (my rec is nod32), leave it offline until all virus check are done, then begin to install your apps.

I've had this problem more than a few times. It usually has to do with a startup (bootup) program that is freezing the system. Not a virus, trojan or anything like that, just a program that is not behaving correctly. Do what david.michael stated with msconfig. Disable every item in the startup tab. Reboot, and see if the problem is solved. If it is, then turn on one startup item at a time, and reboot each time. This will locate the problem startup program through the process of elimination.

Once you locate the problem program, either reinstall it, or don't use it. Or perhaps find a newer version of that program.

That's why you run msconfig and turn one item on at a time (reboot each time) to turn the items back on, as previously suggested.
