The problem is that consumers demand cheaper, slimmer phones - something's got to be sacrificed.

The first generation blackberry (the enormous blue plastic one) can be thrown against a wall and it will still work. It's incredibly durable, but ugly as hell.

These new phones do so much that it's inevitable they will break easier than previous generations, especially when there's a constant rush to get new products to market at the cheapest possible price.

Yeah, 'durability' doesn't seem to enter anyone's decision making process anymore.

Would you blame them?

Less durable = More repairs ($$$) + More units sold ($$$)...

Since majority of the BB users (or at least in the past) were for companies, I can imagine that there probably weren't as many complaints.

" IT Man...my BB doesn't work.....oh its broken...just buy me a new one"

Things are starting to change and might continue to change and BB's become more mainstream with the general public...people like me who can't afford to buy a new one off the street...

I dunno about that, many companies refurb blackberries as they cycle through employees to save costs. Where I work, if you want a super shiney new one, you're buying it yourself.

At my old job, one employee as horrible for losing / breaking blackberries and think they went through a few of them in the span of like 3 months. They'd always get a new model also - mind you, he was kind of 'up there' in terms of power.

Most people would get the hand-me downs / etc, and if they wanted a new model would need to justify why they needed it and have a few managers sign off on the expense.

It depends on the company. But I imagine that larger companies who can get them in bulk don't care as much.

I know at my company, all you need to do to get a new model is to 'accidentally' break your current one.

I can see some 'incidents' happening in the the next few weeks...

Some phones are made to be durable, some are made to be trendy. If you want to have a trendy new phone, don't drop it.

First of all what kinda idiot opens his trunk with the phone still in hand??? I see so many people do this and drop them, then I just jump at them and laugh as hard as I can at their stupidity. I mean would it kill people to put them away in their holsters or god forbid their pockets!

I only dropped my BB curve maybe a few times but not under those circumstances.

Things happen, dropping the unit is normal. I dropped my Treo @ knee height once, I thought the screen is gonna snap ... but, nothing happened. A friend of mine dropped it at table hieght, got a minor pressure crack.

What's really strange ... 2ft height caused that much damage to the Bold. At least we know this, before the retail ver came out.
