I wonder what Moog emulation they've been working on. It would be awesome if they've been working on a synth, but I'm betting a synth is a lot more complex to develop than FX. So I'm betting it's an emulation of one of their guitar pick-ups.
yep, those DSPs are just big dongles. the processing power is really really low. the sonnox are 1:1 identical to the powercore version (algo, not code) and you can really good compare the processing power. where on the powercore you can run only a few instances. on a current cpu it's more like 300 instances.
just for comparison: the new UAD-2 uses the new sharc ADSP-21369 DSP which has 2.4 gflops. the current ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 graphic card has 2400 gflops
the UAD-2 quad has 4 DSPs and the price is listed as ~1900$ in the shops.

Nice.. Hopefully firewire will be an option!

That'll definitely put it out of range for a lot of "hobby" producers. Part of the appeal of the UAD-1 series was the low cost of entry for the hardware, even though the plugin costs over time would easily add up to a total way over that.

that and they can over-inflate the price of dsp powered plugins, knowing that DSP elitists WILL buy them. hell, such people are probably MORE likely to buy them at a high price, than a low price.

over inflated compared to what? i think they're pretty average. $100-$200 a plug? i won't even go into how much the waves/sonnonx stuff is and thats not dsp.

if you look at the sonnox plugins, the DSP versions can be up to double the price of the native version. this does not make any sense. it is most likely easier to program DSP code for a DSP processor than a generic CPU. hence, they're marketed entirely to the oldschool producers (fools) who still think there is value in off-cpu processing. the inflated price, therefore, comes entirely from the percieved benefits of DSP chips. like others have said, the DSP chips are just an over glorified dongle, which imposes stupid restrictions. i can only assume the same marketing theory applies to other DSP plugins too.
i'm not saying that UAD plugins aren't good though, i'm just saying that i think the designers over-capitalise on the false perceptions relating to DSP chips.

According to my dealer the new UAD-2 processor is supposed to be at least two to three times faster than the MPACT2 chip and you will probably have the option of 1, 2 and 4 processors on a single bus. Release date is around October if everything goes well. What I need to know is if the new platform will have the chainer plugin, otherwise I'll sell all of my cards and go for other alternatives.
