<---still exclusively vinyl, though I buy most of my wax either from Discogs or people who are clearing out their collections on Craigslist. These days, unless it's super hard to find, the idea of paying more than $5 for a record seems like utter nonsense.
I have no beef with digital media, but I think the anti-vinyl brigade that sprung up alongside of it needs to rethink its motivation. On the environmental tip, there are a million and one other petroleum products that could stand to fall by the wayside (how about 90% of the plastic clamshells Walmart uses to package nearly every item they sell?) before records. Most d.j.s who are touting digital-only for environmental purposes are probably doing so more for attention's sake than anything else - if they're really and truly passionate about this belief, they should be aboard sailboats instead of planes for overseas gigs, or stay closer to home and work more on developing sustainable local scenes where they can still make a decent living. A leap of logic, perhaps, but no more so than crowing that vinyl has to go in order to save the planet. It also pisses me off to no end when venues decide that they're 'CD only' - talk about myopic.
All this has nothing to do with the usual sound quality and 'perceived warmth' arguments or anything like that - most people out on the dancefloor wouldn't know what form of media the d.j. was using unless you announced it over the mic. Simply put, I've been using vinyl for nearly 35 years and have been d.j.ing with it for a quarter of a century. It's what works for me, and even if the production of it tapers or perhaps ends, I believe that it's a medium well worth preserving.
