Gustavo provides a very interesting dynamic to the race. On one hand, the republicans aren't going to have the same luster during their convention. On the other hand, if the federal government does a good job or if McCain manages to raise money or assist in some other fashion, it could be very beneficial for McCain because he will still get all of the media during this week. I'm nervous about the effects of the storm.

on a side note, is there anywhere in the world with as many natural disasters as the US? If it's not hurricanes, it's tornadoes, mudslides, wildfires, flooding, earthquakes, etc....

Maybe China - Sichuan province just had another 6.1 quake today.

As for Gustav, to be completely callous for a second - I think it helps the GOP, because it takes the scrutiny off Sarah Palin for a few days so they can come up with some sort of strategy to re-introduce her to the public. There were one day of Op-Eds slamming the choice, and now all the attention is going to turn to helping the people of New Orleans.

i was thinking about china when i wrote that.

I can't help but think the storm would be hugely beneficial to McCain if the federal government acts well during the storm.

So far the Red Cross seems to be outperforming FEMA in terms of preparation, so I remain skeptical on that front.

At least the RNC is cutting things short tomorrow - shows they are at least somewhat serious about focusing on Louisiana this time around.

i'd guess the littorals of Southeast Asia or any country in the South China Sea. every time we went there we were dodging something horrendous.

tornadoes though are something unique in their multitude in North America.

Yeah, South Asia in general seems rough - monsoon season, earthquakes, and periodic cyclones on the coast of Bangladesh, Burma, and India. Not to mention volcanoes and such in Indonesia.

I would have been, actually, had he been named VP candidate.

I just finished reading a book about the Sundarbans - the archipelago of islands that stretches from Calcutta in India through Bangladesh to Burma, and it's amazing how awful the weather is there - literally thousands of people die there every year because they get washed away by high tides and storm surge from cyclones, and yet they keep moving back.

Reminds me of New Orleans to a far greater extent.

it is sad how the Republicans are using this hurricane as an excuse to gain more votes.

i don't know the numbers, but i think disasters in the US outnumber those in SE asia. The disasters in SE asia are so bad because housing and infrastructure is built so haphazardly that the human tool is worse.

I think that's a bit overstated - I haven't seen anything like that yet. So far they're doing the right thing.
