You're basically saying that getting someone into DJ'ing is going to ruin their lives for absolutely no reason what-so-ever, which really leads me to believe your participation in this thread serves no purpose other than to be a dickhead troll.

Agree with teaching him from tracktor/virtual dj .. Would be a great way to visually learn the very basics about how music works. Show him the difference between 120-125 songs and 130-135 songs and explain how it just dosent work to mix fast songs/slower songs etc..

Introduce him to the setup, explain the functions of it all.. CUEing is the main lesson here.. Put two of the same tracks on and let him go for awhile.. jump in every once in a bit to help out.. Go from there..

I think its a great thing your doing, Wish anyone was able to visually teach me howto DJ but all i got was a few pointers over IM and a few links for DJ applications.. Was an absolute trainwreck.. Kept trying to mix trance with happy hardcore ??? Where the fuck were you 6 yrs ago huh!?

I like the idea of something like Virtual DJ for starters. It gives a good visual representation of what is going on in a particular track, and it would give him the option of focusing on things like phrasing and EQing since it would auto beat match (should he so choose).

Now, with that said, there is NO substitute for standing behind some actual kit and hammering out tunes. I know I wore out Virtual DJ before I got my turntables, and even though it was fun it's a poor substitute for tactile sensation.

With so much going on in the digital world these days, I can't help but wonder if a laptop + midi controller is the way to go for someone just starting out. Ultra portable and virtually unlimited access to tunes. I'm replacing the bulk of my vinyl with mp3s now, and I can see this is probably the route I should have gone.

Thanks loads for the suggestions guys! I actually think a combination of Traktor/Decks might work best, and have been meaning to invest in Scratch for a while, so maybe I'll do that soon.

That way, I figure I can ignore the "sync" function all together, and explain pitch and beatmatching with the waveform display as a visual aid.
