To answer the OP - if you don't know whether you are bf/gf or not, then you definitely aren't. A commitment like that comes hand in hand with an open willingness to discuss such things. If you can't ask your prospective gf if she is your gf or not, then you definitely aren't close enough with her to bring your relationship to an exclusive status.

I agree... If my boyfriend slept with another chick Im pretty sure it would be worse than a punch in the nose. To me a relationship is an exclusive commitment to each other. However not for everyone. So I tried to give a definition that was simple and qualified for every type of relationship. Thats why I said it was important for a couple to have an understanding of what their commitment to each other means.

If someone was to have an open relationship - the rules and things like that would be discussed. If you were in a closed relationship and your BF came home saying "Hey, I just fucked around with Sally", a punch in the nose would be expected.

But, if you guys had agreed to an open relationship - then that wouldn't be the case.

To me, becoming 'partners' BF/GF, boyfriends, girlfriends, open/closed or whatever combination of the two comes when both parties agree to a romantic/emotional commitment to each other. It may or may not be sexually exclusive, but usually at some point "the talk" happens that clarifies your status to the other person/and the other way around.

"Open relationships" are for cowards and/or sluts.

When two people decide to spend time together because they enjoy eachother's company - that is called being friends. (this does not qualify as a romantic/serious relationship)

When two people decide to have sex with one another because they are attracted to eachother - that is called being "fuck friends", if you will. (this ALSO does not qualify as a relationship)

When two people decide that they would rather spend their time with their respective mate than with anyone else AND voice this commitment - THAT imo is a relationship.

BF/GF just feels real. Sounds corny but you just know. If you're not sure - you're not there yet.
