Amen Bruva. And yeah seriously.. If your having issues learning to beatmatch you are NOT ready to play live.. Barely ready to play infront of close friends because even they will hate listening to the sound of trainwreck mixing and hopefully laugh.

Even when your beatmatching is finally good, Theres other things to consider like track selection .. I think it takes a real long time to properly understand what music goes where and understanding keys and making songs blend.. Don't play out unless your mixing is COMPLETELY unnoticable and you can cue a track up in seconds flat and be comfortable with it.

If you want no chance in the DJ bizz and just mucking around.. Go nuts.

Otherwise don't play live for your own good.. I use to broadcast my mixing live when i was learning to mix.. And so many people heard my trainwrecking and now (despite my much improved mixing) its a lot more difficult to convince them to tune in. The ones who do.. Come back for more.. Big lesson for me.

also, if you know you beat matched it, maybe the motor on the tables are frubarbed. I remember that happening to me once, then i set both my tables to 0 and got two of the same records and sure enough one would start speed up..

I did a gig awhile ago at a local hall, good 250+ people. Had a massive sound system but the problem was I had no speakers facing me. I was at one end of the hall with the speakers facing towards the other end of the hall and the echo was fucking horrible. It made every one of my mixes sound bad to me, but that was because of where I was and because I had no speakers myself. When I had my headphones on the music was beat-matched and sounded great, but once i took them off - the pain. But from where everyone else was dancing it sounded fine.

Quite annoying nether the less :P

that sucks. If the mixer has split cue, which it seemed to have, you're golden.
If I walked into a situation like that, and didn't have that option, I would walk out on the gig. As someone said earlier, every gig you play, you're putting you're rep as a dj on the line. If the promoters can't put together a decent set up, its not worth compromising your rep and risking putting on a bad show.

My first gig I was offered to mix but I turned it down because I fought I wasn't totally ready. But next month I was offered again and took offer and sound system had horrible echo and did ok. When I had headphone on I did good but soon took em off I did shitty and crowd started to boo. So I put on headphones and played rest of set with out problems. Second Gig played without headphones and echo wasn't as bad because club did reduce some of the echo. I did better that time because I had more practice behind me.

I always mix in the headphones only. So no problems with tough rooms/acoustics/echoes.

Last gig I had had terrible echoes on the dj spot. Totally cluttered sound as soon as I would take the headphones off. It kinda sucks when you just want to listen for a sec how it sounds in the room. It's a good backup to make sure you can mix on headphones only . I can't do it anyway else, but then again I've never seen a mixer where you can't mix with headphones only, so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Are you using turntables? If so, belt drive of direct drive? With belt drive it's possible that the belt slips and after a certain time, you're tracks are walking away from eachother.

If mixing with CD's, than you'll just have to practice very hard and get skilled. It took me like 2 years before I started playing on gigs.

Setup was entirely Pioneer. DJM 800 Mixer & 2 x CDJ 1000's. So the gear was good, it wasn't really a big issue for me - I just kept thinking from where I was that I was train wrecking when I actually wasn't but a lot of the time I usually mix with my headphones on the whole time, sometimes without but yeah - either way turned out alright
