Richie is so far past the limitations of final scratch now...it's incredible that he designed it, yet now he's outgrown even his own technology.

As much as Richie plays tracks that you can ID, they are so warped and looped and manipulated that he really is more of a live act now.

(good video, but....)

Yes, because it's better to keep both your feet firmly planted into the past and not explore what new technology can enable someone to do. For a music-scene that used to be so forward looking / innovative / exciting, some people seem to be terrified of technology, embracing it, seeing what it can do and move forward.

Not to piss on old-school Vinyl DJs or people like Mills, I think the 'digital vs analog' debate and which one is better is a tired one. I can understand having a preference towards one or the other, but this 'lets piss on anything new' attitude is pretty bullshit IMO.

Both avenues have their advantages, disadvantages and I don't think that one is inherently better than the other. I dont see a Vinyl DJ and think "yay, Vinyl - he's keeping it real", and I dont see a digital DJ and get all "Huzzah, go technology", I'm more concerned with whats coming out of the speaker and if it's moving me or not.

What I like about the video of Hawtins setup, is that he's showing what is possible with technology beyond letting it simply beatmatch things for you. So many people that rip on digital-DJs bitch that "they are not doing anything because the software is auto-beatmatching for them".

But, when that time is free'd up, it opens up the opportunity to do more things with the music. Its not like they are thinking "yay, my two tracks are in synch - lets stand around and do a Jesus pose for the next 3 minutes"

The technology is also new - and as artists play with it, tweak it, make setups that fit their own style/etc - the end results will continue to improve, and the possibilities of what you can do will open up.

One criticism I will have of Hawtin and the last few sets I've downloaded of his, is he seems to be too caught up in the toys of his technology and mixing a bit too much based on tricks / effects. Too much "cut the bass, layer up the effects, throw everything into a crazy-sounding smash, then pull it back together" - the continual bass cuts gets annoying pretty quickly.

Its the audio equivalent of a kid getting photoshop and using every filter on it just to see what it can do. But, as people start to figure out, experiment and toy with things - the end result ends up getting more polished.

either way, the geek in me likes to see the setups of various artists / DJs, and thought this video was pretty neat.

^ Very much agreed. There's no shortage of DJs who let the software do the beat-matching for them and then just stand there for 5 minutes doing a stupid dance, but that's clearly not the case here.

This is what technological progress means in every industry. Less time spent on the drudgery of menial and repetitive tasks, more time spent on experimentation and innovation. And as with any sort of innovation and invention, it's usually pretty rough and awkward at first, but will continue to improve as people refine their tools and trade. That is until it is so refined and well-known that it too can be automated... and the cycle goes on.

And in response to Traktor not doing breaks properly, it does if you actually prepare the tracks and markers and don't just rely on the auto-scan. I would bet that Richie does that with all of his tracks, regardless of genre - you don't want to risk a mess on stage.

God you're tiresome.
Get with it. No one is disrespecting Mills here, the man is brilliant. But to deny that what Richie is doing is techno is a bit ridiculous. The only thing worse than a hipster minimalist like Richie is someone like you who can't embrace or appreciate technology.
