Sounds from the other posters that Spundae used to book Armin,Ferry,Tiesto etc at Circus.
Now they are at avalon on saturdays yet the talent they have been booking isnt these so called "top level talent"(dont want to offend anyone)
The "top level talent" in LA on saturdays has been at Vanguard
Ferry, Sinclar, Sasha, Digweed,Tiesto, Armin etc
did a switch from circus to avalon also result in a decrease in spundaes budget for booking the "top level talent"
Spundae in San francisco seems to get top level talent at Ruby Skye on a regular basis(Sasha, Tiesto, Darude, Armin,Blank and Jones etc) |
Just want everyone to remember when you say Vanguard what you're talking about is Giant. Giant has always had top notch bookings. The reason Avalon used to have those bookings is because Giant was there. I do miss the days when Giant @ Avalon and Spundae @ Circus did compete week to week. But that only lasted about a year. Then Godskitchen came in and ruined it.

Yeah... Spundae switch to more house acts once they went to Avalon. I'm guessing that because Avalon usually attracts more of those listeners.
Bsck in the day, Spundae did pretty much 85% of trance acts while residing at Circus. I know Circus could use a revamp on the system, but overall, it's a great venue for a powerhouse promoter.
And for those who are questioning the Dj's for next event... don't instantly bash someone because you never heard of them. Every Dj in his/her day had a beginning point. You will only know about them once you do your research. I've had some of my best nights parting to the sounds of local talent.
To mention a few, Bob M., Gil La, Fei Fei were some of the few locals that I first experience up close and personal. And now today, their sound is appreciate much across the boards and even some of their tracks are being played by larger Dj's Armin, Ferry, & Tiesto.
Okay, thats my 22 cents...lol

Ya, "top notch" if you like commercialized trance.
IMO, Avalon has been booking all the top notch talent in LA the past year.

more people know it listen to it, and buy it so i would think more people attend...personally i hate the club scene in LA and even though i live 55 miles from avalon/vanguard I have only been to 1 show this year and that was because Bob Sinclar didnt hit SF or SD and Blowzo hooked it up
SD 3 trips (Fedde le Grand, Kaskade, Dave Aude, Chris Lawrence)
SF 5 trips (Menno de Jong, BT, Gouryella(ya popsicle after party), Morgan Paige, Derick Carter, Starkillers)
and lovefest coming up to see Axwell, Kaskade, and all the artists on the Spundae/Skills float- Armin Van Buren, Above and Beyond, Kyau & Albert, Collette etc(spundae does avalon saturdays, these are "commercialized" artists)
I have BPM on XM, so thats the stuff i get to hear, i dont have underground trance radio so maybe someone can send me a link and i can check it out sometime.

Circus can use a revamp.
Circus NEEDS a revamp. 100% revamp. No Patch work.
A wonderful venue for a powerhouse promoter, if the venue was maed modern.
I know of a few DJs that have told me they loved Circus The Venue, but overtime clubs have to adjust/progress and while they kept hearing about other places in LA building up their setups, Circus was only doing little things to really make the whole venue more enjoyable.
Hence, they looked elsewhere to play.
If DJs migrate to other places. DJs that bring peope in. The DJs promoters rely on everyone once in awhile to make up for other nights where income wasn't so great. When that happens, promoters move too. Or are forced to leave by the club. This goes for all promoters, not just one like Spundae.
In my eyes, the person (or peeps) behind Circus are a large reason of Circus' overall downfall, not because of any one promoter.
Circus is like Ten15 here. It has its dedicated crowd, but outside of that it just isn't popular. Has to be the right person playing there to get huge numbers. It took Ten15 wayyy too longer to really do anything about their issues...and now it's taking Circus too long. A venue THAT large is going to have a hard time building a new audience to the point the place seems like it's going somewhere. It took Ten15 reworking the whole place and a lot of dedication from Taj and dealing with the amazing politics involved with that venue to get Saturday nights to where they are now...especially with what is obviously a shoestring budget, causing him to rely on locals on a lot of nights. But Friday nights are usually disasters still. Overall, the slow rebuild of Ten15 (though still has a long ways to go, but more money needs to be poored into nights there, IMO) could have only happened, IMO, with the redesign of a lot of the rooms.
Cricus shoulda never added that huge room. It killed the feeling inside, and the acoustics. Unless that's been adjusted in the last couple years.
Does Circus have a chance (IMO)? Sure. Maybe someone can come in and recapture a lot of the old DJs who might miss the vibe at Circus...because it's the only place down there that had a vibe anywhere close to up here! But who knows. It's going to be a rough challenge for anyone who comes in and does bookings there.

In addition, I don't understand why Tony P and this happy hardcore cheese is being played in the mainroom. The mainroom has been known to host top-notch banging DJ's in the business with cutting-edge intelligent trance / house / progressive trax. This I will never understand.
I would put Mario Best and Tw33k in the mainroom before that cheese head!!!
