I used to hate writing anything in a book as I liked books to be pristine and perfect, but I had to get over it for the sake of convenience and time-saving.

I usually highlight important parts and if need be I'll summarize the paragraph with a couple of words in the margin just to trigger my memory as far as what was discussed. (I get a little ridiculous with the highlighter sometimes, especially if I'm sleepy)

I know some people that book brief by using different colors of highlighters and stuff for different types of information, but I'm not that extreme/dedicated (law school).

there are few things that i refuse to go "paperless" with... but reading books and taking notes are at the top of the list.

Ah ok, heh. But really, I have a good memory for stuff like that. I always remember exactly where to find the passage I'm looking for or where that good tidbit of info was. And as for actually retaining it, I'd say I keep about 70% just from reading alone. Definitely helps to ingrain it in my mind by making my own notes though.

Otherwise, those Post-it sticky tab page marker things are great.

I don't do it because I always resell my books after I'm done with them.

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

Light pens. Up to 6 different colors on one page. No real system as to what color symbolizes what level of importance or carries what meaning, just an intutitive change mostly in accordance with syntax and paragraph structure. My eyes would somehow photocopy this specific image of colors which made memorizing much easier.

Good ideas

Regarding post-its, I tried using them once, but as stupid as it may sound, I've always wondered... how do you avoid placing the post-it on the text? I tried putting them on the edges of the page, but I lost all my notes after carrying the book around for a while.

I do have my own ~paperless~ office, so to speak. I use WikiPad (a personal Wiki), and even developed my very own digital library (although I eventually uploaded it all to a private Google site)... but the results haven't been that great.

I eventually gave in, and bought a couple of light pens yesterday, though. I hope they can help me in the long run. I will not resell these books anyway (I guess), so I will just use them the best way I can
