If Obama follows McCain's lead now it will allow McCain to control the next week of the election cycle. So Obama is not going to cancel the debate, and if McCain doesn't give up either then who is going to debate? I say add a 3rd party candidate and let McCain look like a dolt not showing up.

Both of these men are still US senators. They are obligated to do something in this case. It's a good move by McCain; someone definitely pushed the right button in his campaign. It's unfortunate Obama didn't think of it first, or that they didn't issue a joint statement that they were both suspending the campaign until Congress enacted some meaningful legislation. If this was obama you people would be applauding his move. The double standards by people on both sides are simply ridiculous!

Obama needs to be in DC trying to enact some legislation, however, still pressing that the campaign must move forward because the underlying issue is not going anyway before the presidential election. He needs to argue that the american people need to hear from both of them about their positions so they can make informed choices. He needs to harp on the fact that, by cancelling the debate, McCain is running away from explaining to the american people his exact position. At the same time, however, Obama needs to be in the war room in Congress trying to enact legislation. He needs to match McCain without following him.

I don't buy that. Neither of these men can do much of anything about it right now except get ready for what they can do when or if they take over in a few months. That means they debate in two nights and get the discussion going.

McCain is stalling because he knows he's losing his grasp on the biggest issue as seen in new state poll numbers.

In response to McCain's announcement today that he is suspending his campaign in response to the meltdown, the Obama campaign is arguing that Obama is the one who made the first suggestion to McCain that the two candidates act jointly in response to the crisis.

From Obama spokesperson Bill Burton:

quote:
At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal. At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama's call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement. The two campaigns are currently working together on the details.

Letterman: McCain’s Cancellation Not Funny
By Bill Carter

Senator John McCain may have disappointed many expectant voters and debate viewers with the decision to suspend his campaign, but none more so than a late-night talk show host on CBS.

David Letterman was so unhappy that Mr. McCain canceled his scheduled appearance on his show Wednesday night that he spent much of the first segment assailing the senator’s decision and suggesting “something doesn’t smell right” about the Senator’s plan to go to Washington to work on the financial crisis.

Mr. Letterman told his audience that Senator McCain had called him directly on short notice Wednesday, to tell him he had to cancel his appearance. After expressing his admiration for Mr. McCain and his sacrifice as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, Mr. Letterman said, “When you all up at the last minute and cancel, that’s not the John McCain I know.” He repeated that “something smells right now” and he suggested “somebody must have put something in his Metamucil.”

Mr. Letterman said Mr. McCain had said the economy was “about to crater” which necessitated that he get to Washington right away. Mr. Letterman then suggested that McCain should not be suspending his campaign at all and that he could have “sent in the second-string quarterback,” his vice presidential running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, to fill in for him. “You don’t quit,” Mr. Letterman said.

After suggesting that Ms. Palin should be prepared to step up and “be ready,” because “the poor guy is getting a little older,” Mr. Letterman reconsidered and said of Ms. Palin’s readiness, “Don’t get me started.”

Even after Mr. Letterman brought out Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC host and vituperative Republican critic as the substitute guest for Mr. McCain, he continued to assail Mr. McCain for the decision to cancel the appearance. His critique reached a high point when he learned that at the very moment Mr. McCain was supposed to be on the couch next to him being interviewed, the senator was at the CBS News center three blocks away in Manhattan, getting ready to be interviewed by the CBS News anchor, Katie Couric.

Mr. Letterman ordered his director to put on a live feed from that location, which showed Mr. McCain getting made up to go on with Ms. Couric. “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport,” Mr. Letterman observed.

After listening to some questions from Ms. Couric, Mr. Letterman said, “Hey, John, I’ve got a question: You need a lift to the airport?”

He then asked Mr. Olbermann if he thought this was all Mr. McCain’s fault, or whether other factors had come into play.

“He ditched you,” Mr. Olbermann said.

heh WTF is McCain doing?! This election is done, or as Noonan said "It's over."

I or someone else post the video when its available.

See this for a preview to another Palin interview where she looks nervous and get stumped.

Funny that Obama thinks the american people should hear from the candidates on the issues now, after refusing for months to do that through town hall venues with McCain.

McCain is more savvy than you're giving him credit for. Here is why:

Just yesterday, Harry Reid says that it’s essential that John McCain backs legislation designed to avert the greatest economic meltdown since the Great Depression. And when McCain says the highly problematic legislation, in its current form, is not good enough, Reid tells McCain to stay away from Capitol Hill. Who’s playing politics with economic crisis? He wanted McCain on the hook so that Reid could blame McCain for the political fallout. When McCain called Reid’s bluff — and that’s what appears to have happened here —Reid did what Reid always does... retreat.

Reid fears that McCain will return to lead the Republican effort to reach a compromise, and the Senate and House GOP will let him do it. If McCain takes ownership of the bailout effort and manages to get his suggestions on limiting executive compensation and so on as part of the finished product, he will be able to trot McCain-Dodd on the campaign trail as yet another reform he’s accomplished by working across the aisle. And in a time of crisis, no less.

And what will Obama be able to say? He gave a couple of speeches and raised cash for himself while McCain went to work for the nation. Notice that Reid never demanded leadership from the Democratic nominee for President. I guess he already knows that would be a futile request.
